Paramo Torres Sleeves - Review
Paramo's suprisingly effective but odd insulated sleeves tested.

I agree with the comments on the sleeves - I used them this winter in the High Atlas at 4000 metres over a base layer and underneath a shell, and found they coped very well with the cold and wind (ventillation being achieved by unzipping the shell). However if you wear them in view, you must expect some ribbing (along the lines of 'why not wear your briefs outside as well'!!). I in fact bought them with a Torres Gilet precisely so as to get the best of both worlds.

I'm sure they work fine and all but NO!!! They're just wrong on so many levels and the ultimate in spod style.

Didn't you buy a special-edition black Quito so you can secretly wear them?

They do kind of look better with a black jacket underneath... In a 'I have massively overdeveloped Pop-Eye arms' sort of way

if you go to the shop wear the quito and try to persuade them that they want to sell you the arms at a discount to match the jacket.

I remember why I didn't buy them now,it was the special edition Torres Light Gilets the Paramo Store had before Christmas that made me wait to see whether Paramo would bring out Torres Sleeves made from the new lighter fabric.Or even a Torres version of the 3rd Element (with detachable sleeves and hood)made from the new lighter fabric.

Graham, yes there is that drip-drip effect of the lighter material. delaying purchases and dropping prices Seeing in the bargains alert thread that Vasco now 99 quid shows the lighter jackets allowing the older jackets to drop in price.

Also, as Paramo Analogy tends to deliver its  best use in the cooler months, its now February, and I found April the last Paramo month so if you'd buy now you'd not use as much and risk through the summer Paramo make more things (like the sleeves) in the lighter option, which you can then get a full winter season's benefit next winter.

Also, the lighter material has a stronger argument for what you pack more than what you wear. Paramo's  Analogy "too warm" problem tends to mean they are worn in winter to replace mid+shell so are worn all day, and to a significant degree that nullifies advantages in weight. The items like the Torres range (inc sleeves) are a packed item and its not just weight but also volume. For many of my journeys I'm as sensitive to volume as weight.  The Torres light gilet claimed more compressibility, hence smaller.

Of course the opposite problem is Paramo will charge more for the lighter products and bargains will arise for the older models, so at the same time you see the lighter ones you'll be torn by the $ saving of the heavier ones.

My personal view is that for a Quito owner or other jacket owners with essentially the capability of the arms to be exposed (3rd element, etc) is you can get lighter & cheaper under-jacket arm warmers which can do a similar, but certainly not as warm, job so I'm also not rushing to buy the Torres sleeves.

Surely the folks who need these sleeves know it already, they have cold hands that gloves aren't sufficient in particular situations.

So some months later, we discover the Torres gilet light is only 370g vs 330g so that's a 10% saving. Extrapolate to the sleeves and the 226g would drop by 24g. Crude extrapolation as the gilet has a lot of zip and the sleeves less non-insulating weight, however, its not a major saving.
