I recently read that a sleeping bag should always be unzipped before placing in a stuff bag. This is to stop the zip bursting.

I've never done this, should i be?

Never heard that.  Never done it.  Never had a sleeping bag zip burst.

Do you think I'm just lucky?

I must be lucky to, it's never happened to me.

I was going to be unkind and ask if your zip has only burst with you in the bag but i won't

I won't be losing any sleep over it -- although I might if the zip on my bag actually did burst when I was packing it away.

I stuff mine while zipped, but I start stuffing from the bottom end so the air can escape through the top.

I used to stuff my bags in to the stuff sack with the zip done up. No damage/problems.

Then I read that I should have stuffed my bags away with the zip undone.

So, I now stuff with the zip undone. No damage/problems.

I agree that it probably helps to start stuffing the bottom end first so that the air escapes more easily.

I can only guess that the general advice: to undo the zip is to lessen the air pressure  when stuffing the bag away.

Has anyone ever had a burst zip or any sort of damage from stuffing their bag in the stuff sack?

Nodrog.

I'd have thought there'd be marginally more chance of damaging the zip by catching or bending one of the teeth if you stuff it with the zip open..... ?

.

Of course the best solution is.....   zip-less sleeping bags!

I'd have thought that they'd be warmer for their wight too.

Any ideas where you can get them?

...(At a reasonable price)

Buy a zipless bag...no problem, actual or speculative.

Mine's a 300 zipless. And it helps to stuff foot end first as said above.

I've never seen or heard of someone damaging a zip by stuffing (zipped or unzipped) but who knows what's possible with enough determination!

Nodrog, I have to admit that I don't own a zipless, I have a 300 with a 1/2 zip. The only reason for unzipping a bag before stuffing is it makes it easier/faster. I'm exceedingly slow these days and even the tiniest time advantage has a disproportionate significance to me.
