Winter warmth in camp is easy - nice synthetic belay jacket for lowish-level backpacking.  Weight with sac 600g. Bottom half tucked in down bag.

I'd like to shed 200g (7oz) for my summer pack but still have something warm for those not so warm evenings in camp. I'm thinking of a layer to go under my breathable waterproof which I carry anyway.

But the belay doubles as my pillow and being comfy at night comes a close second to toasty. So for, say, a total of 400g I'm looking for a light layer to take the edge off the cold plus a pillow. Any ideas please for a suitable combo around the target weight?

Montane Anti-freeze The first version even came with a stuff sac that turned it into a pillow. Not sure if the new version does though.

Or, there's PHD gear - very light. There are a number of choices. Stuff the jacket/smock into a stuff sac for a pillow.

i'd second the vest idea, keeps the core warm for minimal weight and pack size

Coming in at under 300g the Patagonia vest is a possibility.

MD - I am a medium but can't get a link to Ben Turner. Could you let me have a web address please?

The PHD Minim (240g) and Ultra (150g) vests would fit the bill very well. Very warm indeed for the weight and make good pillows. They can also be worn inside your sleeping bag if there is an unexpected late frost to add a good 5C to the rating of the bag. A bit expensive, but not that much more than similar (but not as good) stuff from other manufacturers -- and you might pick up a bargain in the sale they usually have in February.

Given the last 2 uk summers, I'd go for Primaloft

Rab Generator Jacket 380g, or Smock 330g?

Personally I don't see the point of a 'vest' as a standalone insulation piece  - when I'm cold - so are my arms - even in summer!  I do have a PHD minim vest, it's taken to supplement my Photon for freezing camps. The other half uses it more than me!

For a pillow I just put whatever clothes I'm not wearing into dry bag and cover it with a buff.

I have a PHD Ultra Down vest in medium that I may consider selling. I bought it late last year but only wore it a few times. I'm considering selling it to buy a Mont-Bell UL Down Inner Jacket.

I want to use my extra insulation as part of a sleeping system along with an Alpkit PD200 but a vest doesn't work well used that way as it doesn't have sleeves (or it wouldn't be a vest)

Long John,

The Hoody weighs 309g and I've found it to be a bit bulky when "rolled"; hence a pretty good pillow as you mentioned (although I've never used it as such)  I think it works well as either a stand alone base layer or as a mid layer too.  I've found it to be very comfortable under a waterproof as well.  For sitting around in chilly summer nights I think it would be fine.

Another vote for the Rab Generator Smock.

Packs into its own pocket and makes it pillow sized, but small enough to fit inside the hood of a sleeping bag so it doesn't wander off over night. The one flaw with the Ajunkalak is its too big to get in my sleeping bag hood.
