> I would like the light to be softer than my headtorch
Take a small piece of white expanded polythene (protective packing sheet, or laminate floor underlay). Fix sheet to headtorch (rubber band). Result: nice, diffuse light. Rather like a diffuser for photoflash.
For base camping I always take my Candle Lantern and when hiking in winter, I take my mini candle lantern - they sell both over at backpackinglight.co.uk including reflectors for concentrating the light into a smaller area.
I try to travel as light as possible so I normally use a headtorch however the extra warmth and friendly glow of a candle lantern for winter use is very welcome.
I've had my CL for well over 20 years now - the only damage was to me when I closed it from hot (whilst drunk) with my thumb - you can still clearly see my thumb print burnt into the top
