Not good in real heavy stuff I find they keep a bit off, keep the bag clean and look a bit more presentable than a bin liner.Better to double bag or drysac inside the backpack..

Go for a pack liner instead, Mick. I used a sil-nylon pack cover once, and it's too fragile if getting dragged over rock. Mine was quickly torn in a few places.

Bump on internal as opposed to external waterproofing - covers are not entirely waterproof, are easily damaged and make it harder getting to anything strapped on the outside of the pack - plus you'll need a cover for every pack....

Internal waterproofing in the form of a single drybag or several smaller bags allows you to protect the relatively fragile waterproofing and also separate your kit into groups.

I have a light waterproof bag for food, another for clothes, another for kit and a tougher one for my sleeping bag. Easier to find stuff and waterproof right down to taking a dunk in a river

Well I think that everyone here will agree with me that this isn't a free service and since we saved you some money, you should buy us all a drink.

Of course, not knowing who we are will mean that you'll just have to buy a drink for every stranger you meet.

No doubt we'll be reading about your exploits in the papers very soon

I dunno about silnylon (OTT on cost?), but I find a normal PU-proofed nylon pack cover very useful. I do use a placcie pack liner and put my stuff in placcie bags too (I really don't like wet gear!) but the pack cover keeps the pack from getting sodden through and stops little pools of water collecting in its little places.

My experience was that the pool of water was large and formed in the cover, just below the bottom of the pack.

Pack covers are awesome for biking in the mud - they stop the pack getting ingrained with mud.
