funny stuff to weigh

So, having finally bought a bottle of Woolite (thanks, Poundland), I decided to wash my new merino layers at last (TehcnicALS and Powderhorn).

40C, machine washable wool cycle.  No problems; no shrinkage, no stretch.  Hung up on hangers to dry over the radiators.

Then I decided I needed to update my kit databases with details of latest purchases, which includes weighing.

TechnicALS top weighed 239g.  But I thought that it seemed a little damp, so left it on the radiator for a couple of hours.  Re-measure, now 220g.  So, yes, it was a little damp.

So far, nothing unusual.  However, I then decided to weigh it again, some time later, when the heating had been off for a while.  Now weighs 225g.

So yes, the living, breathing merino is releasing water and absorbing it from the air as it is warmed and allowed to cool...

Or is it just the uncertainty of your balance CP?

No, it's the water absorbtion/release of the wool - I've seen the same thing using a laboratory calibrated balance.

did you also get your scales from Poundland by chance?

Would they only weigh things in pounds then? (With a +/- 1lb error)

Think of all the merino sheep who are trying to lose their Christmas weight...."I've lost 20lbs! oh, no I haven't I've just gained another 5....oh no hang on a second...bluddy scales!"

Er, you have more than one kit database?  I don't know whether to be impressed or disturbed...

I believe that CP keeps a database of all his kit databases.

Scales are from TK Maxx (where else?), and are repeatable to 1g.  And I used a reference weight to check (i.e. a handy lump of metal).

So yes, I'm pretty sure it's due to the wool absorbing and releasing moisture.  Most things do it; nylon does, for instance, but not to the same extent.

Multiple databases? Well, yes: one for clothes, one for kit, one for climbing stuff, one for cookware, one for foodstuffs, etc...  Not to mention the activity check lists...

OT Warning!

I just have one - it holds most of what you've just mentioned (I don't have an activities DB for example). I'm a database developer (FileMaker) so I created it way back when as a learning exercise.
