Hi all

 Hi everyone!

I've just joined to ask a specific question - thought someone here might guide me.

I need a waterproof jacket for general use since I live in a very wet part of the country (Devon). The jacket would be as much for in the town as walking - in fact, apart form walking the dog I'm not a big walker.

I'm looking for something that is reasonably fashionable and reasonably warm (but not so much that it's too hot to wear when the weather is warmer). I've already got a kagool (what do you call them, Paclites?) - I'm now lookign for something more substantial

I don't intend to spend more than £100.  I was thinking of buying this http://www.outdoorkit.co.uk/product.php?product_id=2677 because the offer's great but other thoughts are welcome

 Thanks all

Bertie

It is a great offer. On the heavy side these days for a waterproof jacket, but for dog-walking and mooching around town, at that price I'd just go for it - provided it fits, of course!

I'd suggest an umbrella for general use apart from in crowds.  You stay dryer, and spend less, and stay wearing your non-waterproof coat you have that you already like.

Even serious upmarket umbrellas like the nearly-windproof Senz are substantially cheaper than most serious waterproof coats.

Pete.

With my history of losing umbrellas, maybe not. Besides umbrellas and dog-walking are not a happy mix especially when you have a border collie straining at the leash!

Thanks, all. Unless someone comes up with a better suggestion soon I'll think I'll stick to the North Face jacket.

 Bertie

The TNF is certainly good value, but here are another couple you might consider.

They're only a penny more than the TNF. The Montane might be worth considering if you want something really lightweight - only 295g - less than half the TNF or Berghaus.

Thanks for the other suggestions Bruce. I went and bought the TNF jacket yesterday. Amazingly, I got a phone call around 4pm to say the colour I ordered was no longer available. I chose another colour and was told the jacket would be with me next day! If it does come today - less than 24 hours after ordering - that'd be amazing service.

Hi Bertie - good choice, and it'll probably last a lifetime, or at least a dog's lifetime, you don't really need a superlightweight jacket if you're just using it for walking the dog or heading into town, and if you find its not warm enough in the winter, just wear a fleece under it - happy walking!

Wow, it arrived early this afternoon less than 24 hours after I ordered it! And it's just the job!
