Hello,

I'm on the lookout for a reasonably priced medium sized rucksack for walking, but would be able to protect my camera equipment too (perhaps a padded compartment with velcro straps - is there such a thing?).

So do I look for a camera rucksack with room for holding other stuff which may not be the most comfortable for walking?  Or do I go for a walking rucksack which may not offer the protection I want for my camera?

Answers on a postcard please

Thanks!

Hello Eva

How about a 35ltr pack of your choice, buy a cheap rollmat (some pound shops have them). Watch Blue Peter, then cut the rollmat to pad your pack.

Eva

How much photographic kit are you carrying? If just one body & a lens or two, how about a camera bag/pouch inside your rucksack, or just wrap it in spare clothes.

Thanks Mick and CB.

It'll only be 1 body, a couple of lens by then hopefully and filters and holder.  I think my long suffering husband might have an old camera pouch lying around that belongs to one of his manual cameras so I might pinch that - otherwise, I'm quite liking the idea of making my own out of cheat rollmat.  I might even be able to funk it up with blightly coloured foam flowers or something so that I can find it in a dark rucksack!!

Definately food for though...I suspect I'll never get round to the DIY foam case and just pinch hisnibs' old cam pouch

Thank you!

my camera goes in a drybag in my pack - the drybag copntains a few bits and bobs too like remote control, spare battery, lens cloth. as the pack always has something else softish by comaprison in it the camera sits on that. when i'm where i want to get to the camera goes round my neck. the carrying drybag becomes a raincover.

if you want padding just wrap some bubble wrap or a fleece around your camera and put it in a carrier bag in your pack. works just as well as anything else.

lenses are transported either in the the case they came with or in a drybag.

unless you are in the habit of throwing your pack about your camera will be perfectly safe.

camera stuff is heavy enough without adding a lot of pointless foam and restrictions into the mix.

If it's serious photography gear maybe look at specialist photo carrying bags which also give room for other stuff.  Lowepro are an obvious source.  I'm not a photographer (beyond snaps) so have no real experience of how much these help though.

Pete.

Hello Peter, not exactly serious kit but expensive enough for me to want to look after

Well, take a shuftie at some Lowepro packs and see if the price justifies the end.  As noted, not something I use (I have a wee Olympus point-and-shoot) so this isn't an endorsement beyond having heard good reports of their stuff by the Serious Brigade in the past.

CCS are another well known brand for carting cameras about in safety.

Pete.

camera equipment whilst not throw aboutable is fairly robust. i feel sure that you will be upgrading your camera in the future eva as you get more of the photo bug and you will acquire yet more equipment. it may be better to wait and get a pack that will cater for your needs all round rather than just at this point in time.

Wise words Parky - I'm already at the stage where I am holding myself back from buying more kit until I have done more research/borrowing kit to test drive etc.

Thinking about it, I bought a mini rucksack for my camera kit that I have already outgrown...

Incidentally, the solution to my problem was to use a medium sized rucksack for our stuff, give that to t'other half to carry.  I bought a camera bag specifically for my camera that I'd use even when not out walking.

I ended up buying a (don't laugh....) Krumpler Muffin Top bag....
