Hi. Will the Grivel G10 with the flex bar fit a non-crampon compatible boot? Has anyone tried these with any of Merrell's boot range (I find Merrells fit me very will & can wear them for days with no blisters unlike my winter boots from Zamberlain).

I wear the wide version on my telemark touring boots, which require a bendy sole for telemarks and nordic striding and don't have a formal crampon rating. They seem fine on those. Pete.

Thanks Peter. Has anyone used them on 3 season boots?

Yep Eddie I've used them on B0 type boots - Meindl Borneos for example. Good for many winter munros. It's worth re-checking the tightness of the straps after you have taken a few paces.

Thanks. I know the Ci, B1 rating system. Does B0 imply something other than non-crampon compatible? Could B0 be applied to trail shoes? Or would train shoes not even merit a B0 rating?

B0 simply meant 'too flexible to take a crampon' so although the B/C system was invented with boots in mind, I reckon B0 also applies to trail shoes. The problem with fitting a G10 to trail shoes is probably less to do with the flex and more with the height of the rear cradle and straps. Kahtoola KTS crampons (steel or alloy versions) are at least as flexible as G10s, not as aggressively pointed, but do have a strapping system that'll work on shoes as well as boots. Btw, I believe ALS's bussom buddy and long-time TGO gear guru, Chris Townsend, has used G10 crampons on numerous flexible boots for years..... (I've no idea if he was using Superfeet at the time! )

I think I must have used G10s on flexible boots for at least a decade, though I replaced mine last year with some CAMP Stalkers which have a similar flexible bar but a spread of points that better suits my large feet. I'm sure you could attach either to trail shoes, quite possibly sandals, but the result wouldn't be pleasant to walk in or very safe - you'd slop about all over the place, so if it is shoes you want to use then Kahtoolas would be a much better bet. If you have boots though, the binding system of G10s has some advantages, as well as the extra length of points.

I've got Merrell Moab Mids. Am hoping to use the G10 for the extra length but also to save money as I've already got a pair of G10s. Does Chris have his own site?

In which case, put them both on and go for a walk on some rough ground! Looks a bit iffy to me.

To me too! Think I may get the new Merrell Outbound boots as they are more a winter boot but not B1 rated or the Kahtoola KTS if keeping my current boots. Decisions, decisions...

Eddie on saturday in Glencoe i wore G10s with raichle mountain trail gtx which are B0 rated and wore them for about 7 to 8 hours with no problems, that is the most i have pushed them with this type of boot but would be very happy to do it again.

I have been using G10s on my Meindl Air Rev IIs this winter and they have been fine. The only issue I have is with the bolt on the rear plastic cradle, however, the new design doesn't have this bolt anymore. Sadly you can't just buy the rear cradle
