Ive just managed to find the dubbin for my boots, which havent been treatded for some time.

I was wondering, what do you good folks prefer to use and why...?

I found dubin, nikwax for leather and grangers boot wax in my cupboard, what about you....?

seriously, I wouldn't use Dubbin, I'd use Nikwax for Leather

GG64 Beeswax thinned down with Neatsfoot oil to a creamy texture.
Gamekeepers and shooters have used it for years. Also the smell does not alert the game apparently.

Shoe polish and occasionally a bit of dubbin as I got a couple of tins free. Normally it would be Nikwax though.

I like your suggestion waldo as I have been looking for 'premium leather oil with beeswax' as I was allowed to use some on my boots a few years ago.

When I was still using my boots they got Nikwax waterproofing wax once a year (at most) and ordinary polish when they needed it.

My footwear of choice these days needs nothing (good stuff plastic).

Lindsay,I get neatsfoot oil from my local Yeomans camping shop.
It comes in a half pint metal bottle. My Grandad & Great Grandad
were both Gamekeepers, before nikwax. The oil opens the leather
allows the wax to penetrate it also makes the leather more flexible were it needs to bend or crease without drying out or cracking.
I,ve got a pair of leather gaiters over sixty years old and still ..useable<not that I do> . Cheers

I recall circa 25 years ago, pre nikwax, that I was advised not to use dubbin on my leather boots as it would "rot the stiching" anyone else know of similar advice?.

I was told the last time I bought new leather boots that Nixwax doesn't make the 'tins' of wax anymore as it was bad for the boots. However they still make tubes of wax.

Is this the same stuff but repackaged?

Jon wrote an article on this subject in the Gear News section on 19/02/09 rather than repeat it hear just read this post.

The "old style tins are still available in some shops.

"bad for the boots" applying every week over 10 years may be bad for boots. or maybe using it twice is bad for boots. grangers make nikwax tins of wax. nikwax make their own other products. is this unbiased advice?

i tend to take unqualified "bad for" statements with a large amount of salt.

Cheers! Just read the article.

A move from solvent to water based wax, eh? I can see why applying solvent to leather could be bad for them!

I suppose if your only spreading polish on thinly and treating the leather with a water based cream from time to time then the solvent will evaporate quicker and do less damage. I don't use big brand high street dubbins for this reason, I get a big tub of 'gold label' (i think) equestrian dubbin. It's very waxy and put on cold is a fingerwrecker but it stays working for weeks at a time.

I don't usually bother with waterproofing membrane lined boots until the membrane is breached then i'll start with the dubbin.

I can't honestly say i've noticed any damage from using any of the products mentioned above and i've been wearing leather combats and walking boots on and off the mountains for years.
