Hi Janine, welcome to OM! I've got the 'old' style pack without the pole stick things, so can't comment on that. I've got the Aura, which is the female version of the Atmos. As for waterproof - you'd be hard pressed to find a waterproof rucksack unless it was a drybag type, and my Aura's certainly not waterproof. Best thing is to use a waterproof rucksack liner (you can buy them, or use a rubble sack), or pack your gear in smaller drybags. Which one you choose comes down to personal preference and how you like to organise your pack.

Thankyou Imnot a walker but i have been drawn to walk the camino de santiagio where i was recommended the aura range. they said that it depends on size to is that true in the sense of fitting my back to walk? thanks *

.jpg) Welcome Janina, a rucsac has to fit your back, fit what you want to put in it and be comfortable to carry. Try lots on with what you intend carrying inside to get a feel for it.

That's great, Janine; one of my students did it last year and she wasn't a walker beforehand but really enjoyed it. So did I when I did it in '85, even though we did it in the college minibus! Do what AtlasLion suggests - go to a good outdoors shop and try on lots, with a load in the back. A decent shop will also let you take it home and try it in the home for a couple of days so you can make sure you've made the right decision.

This may sound stupid are they waterproof, can't you tell i am new to this! DOES IT hve somewhere for those pole stick things thanks * The Osprey Atmos 35L is an excellent sack if it fits you (it comes in 3 back lengths).
The review that you linked to is for an older version of the Atmos. The current version does indeed have a cord system for stowing walking poles without taking the sack off, although it is a bit fiddly to use in practice. Very few rucksacks are genuinely waterproof due to the complexity of construction and the Atmos is no exception. Either use a waterproof pack liner, pack your kit into individual drybags or use a waterproof pack cover. It's up to individual preference, really as all 3 methods have their pros and cons. Not being able to try packs on in a shop is a tricky one. Try to find an online retailer that will allow you to return an item if it doesn't fit but you will have to pay the return postage and be careful to return it in a saleable condition (I assume that you don't have Distance Selling Regulations in Spain).

hello, thankyou for all your help mens a lot!!! ***

I have an Atmos 35 and it is indeed a lovely rucksack. Surprisingly it doesn't come with a raincover, but that's easily sorted by buying one of the doubtless many out there. The Osprey walking stick solution is, I would agree, a little fiddly, but I was surprised at having seen on a diagram beforehand how little they obstruct and how comfortable things are when they're in position. I generally find that without having done any research, shopping on the spur of moment lands me wishing I'd waited. It's not the case here. Damian

I wonder why the side pockets (I have an Atmos 35) are open on the back side. Everything you put inside will fall out. Expessially when the straps are 'inside'.

I wonder why the side pockets (I have an Atmos 35) are open on the back side. Everything you put inside will fall out. Expessially when the straps are 'inside'. They are not "open". There are small gaps in the mesh pockets to allow the compression straps to compress the main sack without compressing the side pockets. It's an excellent feature.
I have never lost anything from a side pocket on my Atmos - have you or are you just speculating?
