jimjams - puhlease! base layers. you gets what you pays for steve. cheaper than merino. better than merino. very quick drying. athletic (cough!!) fit - max wall eat yer heart out. a superb base/under base layer or sleep layer. weigh little. attractive colour selection, unmanicured a potential hazard, compulsion to carry boxes of chocolate...

Parky I don't mind paying for good kit (ask my wife!) £60 seems a bit steep for underwear (Victoria's Secret excepted of course) (don't bother asking my wife) Steve D

Are these really as warm as marino? I can't quite stomach the idea of wool longjohn and have taken to borrowing my boyfriends old pair of odlo(which are too big and very very holey).

I use a Patra base layer to sleep in as well and Parky is absolutely right - it is fantastic stuff. If feels extremely comfortable against the skin, doesn't stink, is never too warm or too cold and handles moisture very well. It moves easily inside a sleeping bag and weighs less than Merino (long johns and top have a combined weight of 200g in medium).
Only drawbacks are that it can snag on rough nails or fingertips (so keep that manicure up to date) and it needs careful washing and drying.

"Are these really as warm as marino?" difficult to say as they are different things. they are certainly a much snugger fit than any merino and you just slide about inside your bag. they are also considerably lighter than merino, easier to wash, lightning quick to dry, more versatile, earn a bit on the side ninjaing or delivering chocolates.

 > they are certainly a much snugger fit than any merino The items on the website don't look anywhere near as snug a fit as my merino tops. Maybe the Patra stuff is different to other silk things I've seen, which don't have much stretch, unlike knitted merino.

This thread prompted me to google for a silk balaclava, as I've been meaning to use one to replace my silk liner. And I found this. I do like the product description...

they have a little elastane (or similar) in them too capt.

Ok The way they knit merino does certainly make it stretch nicely without any elastic. I didn't realise until I got some that fitted! In very light synthetic terms some of the TNF base layers are very light (60 g medium short sleeved t shirt quoted etc.). Red boxed flight ones iirc. Rohan seem to have stopped doing their ultra t although still a few about.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone used the Snugpak Laponie 350? Is it worth a buy? I'm looking to get a new sleepong bag, abd this summer I will be in scotland, in the middle of August. So as a student, was looking for something to do the job, without breaking the bank.
