.... and an early step in pitching is unrolling your bag so it has time to loft up after being compressed. Store the bag when not used loose inside an old pillow-case with DIY drawstring, hang it in the loft for example, and then just stuff it when packing for the trip. Then when camping unroll the bag early in your evening preparations so its lofted to maximum before you enter.

Agree as to not putting on too many clothes inside the sleeping bag - a set of long woollie undies from Ice breaker or similar is perfect. If you put your daypack at the foot of the sleeping mat and put your feet up on it it makes a big difference to your warmth. And anything else you have, if soft, goes under the sleeping mat - empty bags, fleeces, down jacket, magazines.

It can also depend on how 'hot or cold' you 'run'.

I can use a +5 bag down to -9c, with just a light base layer, a light fleece and socks.

I've slept at -35c in a bag and jacket/trousers rated -25c, overnight, unplanned bivvy, no shelter and was waking up to vent heat, to stop bag outer freezing over.

That's just me, everyone is different. I can "get away" with carrying lighter clothes/gear than most, I know this works for me, it will not be the same for everyone. You have to find what works for you. EG. When Stephen and I go on a meet, he runs a lot colder than me, therefore he needs to bring warmer kit, S/B, clothes, etc. than I need to.

Even in winter, I can pack everything into a 32lt OMM Jiri. for a long weekend. As long as it's above -9c, then I need to change to a lower rated S/B.
