Turnbull's Book of the Bivvy has passages from R L Stevenson I think talking about an insulated bivvy bag (wool plus waxed cotton IIRC) that he devised in that sort of era... 1878 according to Amazon's search feature...

As CP says, it's a very very old idea! But maybe the Welsh were the first to integrate the inflatable sheep...?

Clearly the inflatable sheep is the most innovative aspect of the entire sleeping roll concept and the Welsh should be congratulated for it.

I've now decided to apply for a research grant to look into the sleep rolls of Roman soldiers. Did they have standard versions for when the full baggage train was in operation, and UL versions for when they were operating fast and light (expedite)? I can see this has potential...
