Help is required.  My dad died about 18 months ago and my mum never went anywhere without him, but now she's forcing herself to get out more and see some of the things she may have missed out on as my dad wasn't as mobile as he could have been.

Anyway, we're heading home this easter to see me mum and she's asked if we could take her up to the lakedistrict for a few walks, which is great.  She's heard me going on about the beauty we see on our walks and she's seen all the pictures and she wants to see some of the places for herself.

She's in her 70's and still walks about 5 miles a day down to the shops or the church and back, so I'm not really worried about the length of the walk, just something that is not too difficult.

My immediate thought was tarn hows, but I've usually done that off peak and the one time I did it during a bank holiday it was like euston station

So then I thought of Rydal water, but I don't know what that's like at a bank holiday either.

So I'm asking for any suggestions for easy walks of up to 5 miles around the lake district that will be slightly off the beaten path for most visitors over Easter.

Ideally I'd like her to see some of the beauty the lakes have to offer, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Look at the walks by Dave and Edith Brown - they post them on OM too.

There a number of less taxing walks and the pictures they take/post look really beautiful.

Have a Happy Easter.

Get the ferry from Glenridding to Howtown and then walk back along the good path beside Ullswater to Glenridding. Some really good views, not too much up and down and shouldn't be too busy even on a bank holiday, because it involves just a bit too much effort for many people.

Have a look out for the two books, Exploring The lakes and Low Fells, by Bill Birket.  Plenty of lower level stuff in them.

Thanks for the tip RaR - just bought a copy of volume 2 on ebay for a fiver, sounds perfect!

I think Guy's idea is a good one. It gives a lovely flavour of the lakes, is a good stride without being too much and has the adventure of a boat trip as well. As a variation, if you really want your mum to experience being up a fell, you could get the boat to Howtown and then take the bridle way up to Moor Divock (visiting the Cockpit stone circle whilst you're there) and then climb up to Arthurs Pike- great viewpoint.

Round Buttermere is a low level walk my wife enjoys as it requires little effort yet has lovely scenery and a cafe at the end.

Someone on here once recommended Gummer's How. You can park quite close and within 5 minutes have the most fantastic views - the entire length of Windermere for example.

 Hope she enjoys it.

Take a look here

or

Reston Scar & Hugill Fell

or

Rydal circular

There's many more suggestions on the website.

Another vote for the suggestion by Guy (Ullswater shore) and also Geoff's suggestion of the walk round Buttermere - both really good low level lakeside walks with fantastic views and scenery and hopefully not as busy as the obvious honeypots like Tarn Hows.  Another good short walk in the Ullswater area is the walk to Aira Force which could be extended to Dockray for tea or lunch at the Royal.  The Good Guide to the Lakes book also has some good suggestions.
