Hoping to do some 2-3 day backpacking trips, would like advice or suggestions on a suitable pack in the 50-60L range for carrying approx 15kgs. Have had a gander at the Gregory Z55 but it's a bit pricey, would rather something below £75 if possible. Also, I've noticed several folk complaining of packing  issues due to the curvature of packs with ventilated pack systems so I'd prefer recommendations where this is not an issue. Thanks in advance!

Start with the Argos catalogue .

What they sell now would have been the mutts nutts a few years ago .

I have an unused new Golite pursuit. Large size red colour £30 + £5 carriage. Interested?

Thanks for advice re Argos Jim. I have looked at a few of the 'own brand' packs in shops such as Argos and Tesco but doubted their quality.

Nick, having checked on web that seems a really reasonable price for the golite pursuit. Couple of questions, the large is 54 litres capacity is it? Also, why exactly are you selling it?  Cheers.

The puruit has little in the form of back stiffening. That means you have to pack it well and it is really better for lighter loads. It is good and I thought hard about getting one. I pack from about 7-8kg with food to about 11kg with several days food (but no water).

I can recommend the Berghaus arete 45litre sack. It is a simple alpine climbers style of sack and whilst lower than the 50-60litres you need Berghaus does tend to work to larger litres than most other brands. I own a predecessor to this type of sack from Berghaus (an early one in the extrem range). It was 50 litre plus 10litre overstuff (which has been used in the past quite a lot). I used to carry 26litres plus in it and strapped to it. Now I carry from 8kg to 18kg depending on what trip I'm doing.

I have seen the Arete45l sack going for £50 before now. Avoid the arete pro 45 litre sack as it is a heavy 1.5kg  or so. The plain arete 45 is about 1kg as it doesn't have the rubberised front panel and all those alpine climber specific features such as tool holsters.

I am not quite certain of the capacity, the Golite website gives 51 litres but that may be the medium. The tags on the pack do not give any volumes for the large.
I am selling this because I put in a speculative bid on ebay and bought it, I really wanted a Golite Jam. Go Outdoors subsequently had the Jam on offer for £39.50 so I bought one and decided to sell this onto fund the Jam. I did advertise it in November on the forum and someone was interested but gave back word.
What Time to Go states is not so accurate. The Pursuit has a shaped plastic insert down the back together with 2 aluminium rods for extra stiffening. These can be removed to lighten the pack. This extra stiffening is to enable it to carry heavier loads than the Jam or my other pack the Golite Dawn.
I can send you photos if you give me your email address.
You do not have pm logo at the bottom of your forum post, neither do I as I use a Safari browser on a Mac which does not seem to be able to cope with that.

Re Time to Go - I think I'd maybe struggle to get my kit in a 45 litre daypack like the arete.

Nick, my email address is: /forum/smilies/confused_smiley.gif[/img]inky1873@hotmail.com]sinky1873@hotmail.com

I take it you believe the rods and plastic insert would prevent the back being 'lumpy' unless carefully packed?

Also, do you think the main compartment will be big enough to accomodate a sleeping bag in it's stuffsack without too much difficulty? It wouldn't be barreling the pack? My bags reasonably compact - a Macpac Sanctuary 700 if that helps (probably not).

If you could send me some pics and continue comms via email that'd be grand. I'm quite keen on the idea of a bag that weighs 1.3 kg so a sale may be possible. Don't want to rush into it though in case it's not suited to my needs.

The large is 54 litres according to their website. Although you have to select the size chart in the bottom right of the screen on the page I linked to. It has the full sack range with the sizes, weights and volumes.

I stand corrected. The website didn't mention them so I thought it wasn't in it.

Nick, my email address seems to be corrupted a bit in previous message.

 Hopefully this works.

No rush getting back to me, I know it's getting a bit late.

Cheers

Time to Go

Thanks for that extra info on the Pursuit, I believe my torso length is 20 inches so the large will be about the right size for me I think.

I found info on the pack here too despite the fact they're sold out.

I've got a Z55 that i am thinking about selling as I want something a bit smaller and if I off load the 55 it would go some way to placating "She who must be obeyed" before another parcel arrives!  It's virtually as new but I've shortened and resewn some of the straps.  If you have a, ahem "portly" midriff it might be a bit tight on adjustment though.  pm me if your interested.

That's a good shop Owen. Just called them up as I had the online order for a half price sleeping bag about to go. Asked the stock of the longer version and had a good chat. The guy uses one himself and gave me some pointers how to get the best out of the quilt. Very helpful and made me make my mind up to get it. He told me I should get it on Wednesday. Sounded like he was going to fish it out straight away the way he was talking. Also means I don't have to go to the shop as I go there a lot to check out the offers but always resist buying. Too many nice gear there for my liking. Loads of Outdoor Research stuff like their excellent UL dry bags.

Owen - Cheers for the info on the Quest but see below.

Wurz - Thanks for the offer of the 'modified' Z55 but I've decided to go with the Golite Pursuit. I think I may have struggled with a reduced waistband anyway, hence my plans to get out and about walking for a few days at a time this next while.
