I'm about to purchase my first pair of crampons and have - with the aid of very good advice from my local outdoors store - narrowed it down to:

Black Diamond Contact (£85 - recommended as a good alternative to Grivel G10s)

or

Grivel Airtech Newmatic (£125)

I'll just be using these for winter hillwalking, (moderate) Munro bagging, etc. Obviosly a fair difference in price and while the Airtechs sound like they might be the best option, I wonder if they're more advanced than I really need?

Any useful advice would be greatly appreciated.

check which ones fit your boots best...and then...is there much difference in weight (I'd go for the lightest pair)

Grivel Air Tech are designed for a boot with no flex in them (four seasons boots).

If there is any flex in your boot this will be dangerous and you may need to purchase a stronger bar to stop them flexing.

Wifey had a pair of  these

And although they fit the boot with the groove in the back "they are not ideal"

i took them and used them on my four seasons boots and she went with my G10's.

What boots do you have ?????????????????

I have a set of Grivel Air Tech crampons and really impressed with them.  They fit my Scarpa boots really well (had to get the store to swap the standard bar for a curved bar so they fit the boots) and I have found them easy to fit and light.

I went for them in the end as they will probably outlast me!  I intend to take up technical climbing in NZ so wanted some crampons that would do it all.

The monta rosa are supposed to be good as well

The Airtechs are also available with the New Classic binding system which will work with less technical boots.

If all you're going to be doing is walking, then the Black Diamonds or the Monte Rosas that Glyn linked to will be fine if they fit you're particular boots ok.

The heel cradle on the Monte Rosa is quite wide and didn't fit my winter boots at all well (Kayland Apex Rock). Play 'Simon says' on this one - check the fit!

Didster - I have a pair Mammut Monolith GTXs which are B2 rated. The guys in the shop tried them with the BD Contacts and they were a good fit. They reckoned they should fit the Airtechs ok too.

Thanks for the Ebay link Rebecca.

I've just bought the Airtechs, with both the flex bars and the rigid ones, so I can use them on my SLs and the new Mantas.  So far, they seem good, and the New Classic binding works on both boots.  These crampons seem slightly wider than G10s and 12s, so better for wider feet/boots.
