I have various different grid refs for the priests hole cave and I understand it can be tricky to find. Could someone furnish me with the definitive co-ords please.

Hi

Check out my video (in 3 parts) on the Priest Hole.

It's worth watching it all as it'll give you a good idea with the scenery where the cave is.....and in one or two shots you'll see exactly where it is on the crag

Part One:

Part two:

Part Three:

By the way. We ascended from Brotherswater Inn....though I've been many times to the cave. Once found....it aint forgotten

Please don't do that anyone. I am not being difficult Weevil but it was once advertised in a public place the secret cave in the southern end of Borrowdale (in TRail mag although they will claim a precise description of how to find it is not giving away the location). Anyway that was before I had managed to stay in it. I had friends who had found out about it by word of mouth and stayed in it in its heyday. The place was publicised and within 2 weeks it was trashed completely. Beer cans all over the place and the secret door mechanism was broken.

The priesthole cave is well known and is easily found but please don't give the GR so publicly. BTW a gr might not help you. I knew where it was on the map and it took me years to find it. In the end it was obvious and higher up than I had thought it would be. Go to the crag where it is located and just look for a path. It is easy to find once you have that path just don't give any GRs please.

Same goes for Millicans cave and all those other shelter spots around the country. Sorry if I'm coming across as a spoilsport but you must understand how p*ssed off I still am about the secret cave. BTW there is also the remains of a stone hut halfway up a crag face in the Lakes. In the Wasdale area I think. Now try to find that one if you dare.

Chill

I aint no fool

I never reveal grid ref's for such places publicly. NO freakin way

And I know the other cave you refer to, too.

Thats why in my video I made things discreet...you don't see more than you would on foot and with a bit of initiative and navving.

And the hut you refer to in the Wasdale area? It's in ruins.

I know its in ruins. Theory is its a smugglers or illegal distiller's hut apparently. doubt it somehow.

I posted my plea BTW before your post appeared on my screen. I've not looked at your vids but take your word for it that it is not an invite for a beer can filled priesthole cave in the future.

I do think that there are places worth trying to keep a little secret. Same goes for the best widl camping spots too. If you are not prepared to take the time to look for somewhere then you don't deserve to use them.

If you look through back copies of TRAIL magazine I'm sure they give grid refs and detailed descriptions of how to find the Priests Hole, Millican Dalton's cave as well a several other 'secret' locations.

yes, I think TRAIL also did a 3/4 page article on "The Smugglers Hut" a couple of years ago.

I do find it hard to belive that the beer drinking litter leaving piss & shit in the corner of a cave brigade would even own a map or use this forum. And a grid ref would make their brains explode. I found it first time using a os map (dont think it is on harvey ? ) and my eyes. And i would hazard a guess the cat was out the bag long before the tv prog.

It is known but there is no harm in making people work for something. As far as beer can drinking types go, I know a few who are regular hillwalkers. Fortunately whenever I have been with them they have taken them home after the camp. I noticed you escalated it with the piss & shit added. You get that near any popular wild camping spot and at least that can degrade (although is a health hazard near water sources). The tinnies can't and believe it or not I have seen them in some of the more remote areas of the Lakes (anything over 1.5 hour from a road is considered remote in the Lakes).

If you make things easy for people you get the lazy types using it. I do think the Trail mag was wrong to describe the various locations however IIRC there were no grid refs for Millicans cave, the secret cave or the priest hole cave however they did describe how to find them. Not much difference I suppose but still wrong IMHO. The cat might be out of the bag but no harm in not repeating Trail's mistake.

Funny you should mention piss and shit yoda because I had some friends who went to priest hole cave and found that inside the entrance (pretty much open anyway but between where you kip and the view was a pile of human excrement. Almost as bad as the shit by the side of the streams used by widlcampers at Angle Tarn near Patterdale. That was bloody awful.

I guess my problem is not with these sites being widely known but with the idiots who mis-use them. The good thing is I reckon you lot aren't like them.
