I'm planning a Dartmoor overnighter, starting at Meldon Reservoir, coming off the moor the next day at Lydford and getting a taxi back to Meldon. Has anyone left a car overnight at Meldon and was it OK?

yes & yes... a couple of times

Jake, a useful tip (as I expect you know) is to look for broken glass - avoid if there's much! You could try asking a local person - may be able to leave car somewhere near a house? Farmer may oblige? If going to S Dartmoor, let me know, may be able to provide parking.

Thanks for the replies. Meldon is probably not too bad. Rather than broken glass, I look for fire marks - usually means that the local chavs (probably ravers as well ) congregate there after dark to indulge in their foul practices. I've decided to park elsewhere and get a taxi to Meldon.

If you're really worried Google Betty Cottrell's pub just outside Okehampton- its a favoured BPC venue and you can usuallly leave a car there for a couple of quid

In the end I left my car at Lydford and taxi-ed to Meldon Reservoir. Although the carpark states no overnight parking, the taxi-driver said that this was to discourage "naughty people" as it is apparently a popular dogging spot Anyway, I slogged around to Black Tor via Vellake Corner in the rain but once I got above 400m or so, visibility was minimal. I had taken totally inadequate gloves so my hands were really chilled. I then fell into a bog so they got even more chilled... With sunset approaching, I sacked it and headed north off Homerton Hill, micro-navigating in the mist and managing to plunge one leg into a hidden stream along the way. This was a new one on me. I was walking along when the grass just gave way beneath me and my right foot dropped about 2 feet into water before I could stop myself. So, a bit of a washout but I did learn a few things (and I'm not just talking about the dogging). Anybody else out on the moor yesterday?

.JPG) Unlucky with the weather there Jake - as driving home after work from the edge of the moor - both Thursday and Friday afternoon the rain was full on If you're really worried Google Betty Cottrell's pub just outside Okehampton- its a favoured BPC venue and you can usuallly leave a car there for a couple of quid Betty Cottles Inn
didn't know that they did that John - thanks. Was gonna ask to park last week at the Fox and Hounds but realised it was Mothers Day so would be busy. As an aside, their bar manager (F & H) is an oaf who learnt his manners from Fawlty Towers. Landlord's OK but seems to let the manager get on with being unhelpful (maybe he didn't like my face )

I went in for a pint yesterday and he was really offhand. If you're reading this, don't call your customers "mate" when you don't know them from Adam, try to look less miserable and hey, why not respond when someone says "Good evening" instead of standing there with a face as welcoming as the weather outside? The folk down the road at the Dartmoor Inn are charm personified but it is expensive.

Trip report par for Dartmoor Jake - especially the hidden streams - a typical hazard down in low lying areas
