Think I'll stick to smoke signals and/or runners!!!

Why not pigeons? You can send messages or eat them - not both though unless you get the order right

That's a bit bloody ungrateful, AL! Pigeon flies through hell and high water to get a message to you and you spit-roast it?!

Foxtrot Oscar.         Thanks Mal, you too.

To be serious, (for a change), as most of my walks are solo, I normally leave a general description of my intended route with someone. If possible I'll let them know each day that I'm OK. If they haven't 'heard' from me by a day after I said I'd be back, then I'd want them to call the relavent services:- Police and MRT.

My wife can map read. Know how I found out?

Constantly being nagged to do so, I leave a planned route at home when walking solo and I have a template text message on my phone which I send at the end of a leg on overnighters, "All OK on route on time setting up camp". After returning from a two nighter I uploaded my route from my Satmap to my PC while my wife was looking over my shoulder and she immediately spotted that I had set off from a start point some tens of kilometres west from my planned start point, in fact starting from my planned destination, and ending up even further west. All hell broke loose and I was accused of deception, stupidity, being inconsiderate. I was told never to bother leaving a route plan ever again as I couldn't be trusted. I tried to explain that I had merely changed my mind and that I'd been perfectly safe but to no avail. I suppose my wife had a point that if something had happened and I hadn't contacted her she would have sent emergency/rescue services in completely the wrong direction. We are over that now and if I do change my mind I take the first opportunity, signal presence/strength permitting, to tell her my GR at time of calling and new destination GR and ETA. If I can't get a signal I stick to my original route plan but now I'm not allowed to do more than a one nighter solo unless I know that I can get a signal along my route.

I've a very strong family history of short life expectancy due to heart disease and my wife is far more conscious of it and far more concerned about it than I am.  The fact is, if your nearest and dearest are wont to worry then nothing will stop that but going through the motions will at least make them feel precautions are being taken.

I like walking on my bill...but when going to scotland often go with a buddy (car share etc etc ). My Senior Management likes this  - says this buddy is responsible and doesnt take risks - which is sort of funny as he is the one with an MRT history (ski boot fracture after sticking foot down hole on way off a Munro).

Anyway....his Senior Mangement likes him going with me as...yup, she thinks I am responsible and dont take risks.

This worked fine till both sets of Senior Management met up and compared notes.
