We are going to Long Island, New York and then travelling up to Boston. We are looking to go somewhere for about 5 days between Long Island and Boston. We would ideally like a place that is suitable for families, 2 boys aged 8 and 12, with lakes where we can swim and somewhere suitable to walk. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I would like somewhere about 3-4 hours from Long Island.
Having many relatives in that area I know it quite well but not from a walker's point of view. However, if you stick to the very minor roads that run up the coast and look up places like Lyme, Saybrook, Westerly, etc., there's plenty of walking mainly along beaches and dunes; miles of it in fact and the farther North, the better they get. Inland a bit there are plenty smallish lakes in which people swim but I'm just wondering about your timetable. Where are you going to be on Long Island? I ask because it takes quite a bit if time to get from the Island round to the coast unless you take the Bridgport ferry if it still runs. I can assure you Boston is more than 3-4 hours from Long Island but you can have a wonderful time for 5 days making your way up that coastline.I wish I was going.
By the way, that side of the Atlantic is very warm compared to ours but since jaws I've never been able to swim there without looking down between my legs all the time!
Just adding to my previous post. Although you have to consider the boys it would be a pity to miss the gorgeous little towns, mainly ex-whaling thst dot that coast. Absolutely beautiful houses and buildings - even Safeway is worth looking at.
