I'm hoping to head off to the Appalachian Trail some time this summer (July-early September) for around a month to work with one of the trail crews. I was thinking of volunteering for either the Maine or Vermont crews but not sure which would be best (if they aren't full). What is it actually like at either of those locations?
Well done Amp34. I would post this on Whiteblaze.net. Check with the each states trail maintainers of what they are doing and when, busier at the weekends, Their tasks are various ,shelter repairs, pruning undergrowth, signposting. I have been in Vermont but spent most of my AT time in the south. Bit early for fall colour and leef peepers. Maine would be starting to be cold at night.
It is claimed that AT trail maintainers are the largest volunteer group in the world -they do a fantastic job. There is a Maine trail maintenance club not sure about Vermont.
Thanks for the link, looks like a wealth of information, i'll definately sign up there.
I'm looking into working in the trail crews, which appear to spend 5 days a week working on the trails, with a couple of days off for your own things, which would be perfect for me, just not sure where to go and how easy it is to get to either as well.
Tho my plans may go on hold because of the Volcanic ash, I was planning to go to Maine in and do the 100 mile Wilderness on the AT in late Aug ,E Sept ,with some American friends. My plan was to to use Bangor International airport in Maine but that requires an internal flight from NY or Washington DC where I would land. Where exactly I land depends on if I do more of the trail before where its a bit warmer as its a long way to go to do just the 100 mile on the trail.
Yeah, it's one of the reasons i'm looking at doing a month, it's a long way to fly for a week or two. I gave the AP trails people an email a few days ago about locations etc but just waiting for a reply, hopefully one or both will be reasonably easy to get to.
