Just got in and turned on the tele to get the local news/weather and heard that karrimor have been taken over by longdale-or something like that-wonder what impact this will have?

 from the BBC
Outdoor equipment firm sold
An outdoor pursuit equipment firm has been sold within 24 hours of it going into receivership.
"Karrimor is one of the UK's leading companies in the design, supply and retail of this type of equipment.
It employs 60 people at its headquarters in Clayton-le-Moors and another 190 in retail outlets across the country.
Corporate rescue and recovery firm Begbies Traynor was appointed administrative receiver and has since sold most of the business as a going concern to Lonsdale Sports"

Guy I think only 4 owners. First the Parsons family who founded it. Then Invest 21 who were Italian based. Then Cullinan Holdings from South Africa. And now?
Cheers Dave I tought as much
Karrimor, A Great British Company.
My arse ! once maybe but no longer methinks, I wonder how much of their goods are made in the UK now?
Still awfull news for the employees, first Lowe Alpine and now this :(
Well we don't know if it is bad news perhaps the new owners will set up a factory and make kit in the UK!!
No your right of course.

We went into the shop on Deansgate in Manchester on Sat to find a 50% off everything sale, after queuing for 1 1/2 hours managed to get a Suunto watch, dragonfly stove, couple of rucsacks and another couple of baskets of assorted items.
Do not know if there will still be any bargains left.
The staff said that Rab turned up on Fri and removed all their stock then 2 men in suits arrived and told them they were closing down and being taken over by JJB sports.

Karrimor provide gear for the guys at Plas y Brenin, also they took over the YHA shops last year. It will be intesting to see what happens to them.
It's not been the same since Mike Parsons left. He had real vision and a flair for what genuine mountain-lovers would want to buy.
From what I've heard (admittedly third-hand). The new owners are the people who own Sport Soccer, which will be taking over some of the shops. No idea what will happen to the rest of the shops or Karrimor itself.
what caused them to go into recievership - isn't it all going relativly (relative to foot and mouth time, obviously) well for the outdoors at the mo?
why now?
Karrimor has been sold to Lonsdale Sports, the boxing suppliers retailer and as part of the deal they also got seven of the retail outlets these are: Clayton-le-Moors, Manchester, Cambridge, Brighton, Nottingham, London St Pauls, and London Wardour Street. a buyer is still being looked for to buy the remaining 20 shops. see: http://www.bikebiz.co.uk/daily-news/article.php?id=3692

All the stores in the peak outdoors areas then.....
I have been in the manchester shop this morning still some stock left all at 50% off, loads of rucksacs and footware left. The assistants are all from the lonsdale and jjb sports shops in the area.they think the manchester shop will be a lonsdale outlet.

Just spoken to my ex-boss (the receiver) who has confirmed pretty much as above.
I went into the Brighton store on monday (just got back from holiday over half term) and it was stripped almost bare,I did however manage to get some Summit pants to match my jacket (no one else musy have wanted them in size midget) and a Cougar 60-85 for half price though, so I'm not moaning!
The staff said Sport and Soccer had bought the shop, is it likely that they will diversify into outdoors stuff or will it become another generic tracksuit and trainers shop?
 It's a bit sad really isn't it.
I agree with Alison that the brand was losing its way - I wasn't desperately impressed with a 30litre daysack of theirs I got a year or two ago and ten years ago I would never have thought I'd be underimpressed by a Karrimor sack, but better an off-colour Karrimor than yet another clone Millets / Blacks / trainer outlet.
<sigh>

Going to Ambleside tomorrow - I guess all the bargains will be gone.
Does anyone know if the Peak Store in Derby is involved, I think it was owned by Karrimor but I'm not sure.
