I had a similar worry about a stove in Easyjet hand baggage to Geneva last year and someone on here came up with the bright idea of posting the stove ahead.  It only cost about £2 and saved me the hassle of possibly getting refused and then not having a stove on holiday or buying another one.

I think posting it back would have cost about £6, but I took a chance and it got through as hand baggage at Geneva ok.

Earlier this week I was fine with an alcohol stove (that did not smell of alcohol to my nose) and a Platypus Little Nipper (that smelt of alcohol despite washing) in checked-in baggage. Always been OK with gas burners.

from the easyjet website

Camping Equipment

Camping stoves and fuel tanks that have been used to contain a flammable substance may be carried on condition that all liquid fuel is removed completely from the camping stove and/or the fuel tank, and that the necessary steps have been taken to nullify the danger.

To nullify the danger the empty fuel tank and or container must be allowed to drain for at least 1 hour, the fuel tan or container must then be left uncapped for a minimum of 6 hours to allow any residual fuel to evaporate. Alternative methods such as adding cooking oil to the fuel tank and or container to elevate the flash point of any residual liquid above the flash point of flammable liquid and then emptying the fuel tank and or container are equally acceptable.

The fuel tank or container must then have the cap securely fastened and be wrapped in absorbent material such as paper towels and placed in a polyethylene or equivalent bag. The top of the bag must then be sealed or gathered and closed with an elastic band or string.

Provided the above cleaning method is followed in accordance with these requirements, then the fuel stove or container can be classified as non hazardous.

The problem is that the airport security team and Easyjet airport team may not know the difference between gas and liquid fuel stoves - and there is a bin of stoves at Liverpool airport which is disposed of every night! If you do carry a stove with you, I suggest you rpint off the relevant page (in the link) and be prepared to stand your ground.

Hi all

I just flew from Belgium (Charleroi) to Prestwick with Ryanair and carried my tent poles as hand luggage with no problems there and back.

My friend packed his poles in his backpack and checked in  and they got bent ! Fortunately on the way back......

Hi Simon,  your link just returns me to this forum. I haven't been able to find anything like the text you quote on EasyJets site.

Whatever the airline says,  in the end it's the airport security that are the ones who will have the final say, and that is probably very individual for each airport.

here is the long link

http://easyjet.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2838/session/L3NpZC91djV1czQ5aw%3D%3D/kw/camping%20stove/r_id/166/sno/1#campingequipment

or

here

(dont know why the last short link didnt work...must have copied the worng URL.

You need to go to help, then FAQs, then search "camping stove" then click on camping equipment - gets you to the page.

all I did was copy paste from the page.

What happened was I checked in at Liverpool and had a hold bag (with camping stuff in it) which had to go through the odd sized luggage scanner.  When it was scanned, security asked me if the stove was brand new or used (err...used...why?) and then told me I had to get it out and hand it over for destruction.  I started to argue the point (asked for a manager) as gas stoves are not on any list anywhere - and was refered to the Easyjet desk as "we (security) are just operating under Easyjet instructions and they dont allow stoves".  Got to the Easyjet desk and they agreed they do allow stoves...as long as there is no residue of fuel on them.

I got the stove out (which I hadnt used for a few weeks) and they took it away to check it (I think they just gave it a good sniff) and was cleared -  but had to go back to security, tell them and tell them to ring the Easyjet desk for confirmation - which they did.

I gathered that if it had smelt of any fuel residue (gas sometimes leaves a gassy smell I think) then they would have said No.

Edit: as for poles etc in cabin bags - just dont see the point in risking it.  After all, you just dont need to have a recalcitrant security guy between you and the plane, on the way out or being faced with needing to find a new stove or poles as soon as you arrive....
