I'm soon to be heading over to Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. As such I was wondering which walks people would recommend, particularly in NZ and HK. In both of these places im hoping to do a multi day walk, but preferably with huts available as im not sure whether im a) going to take a tent b) whether i'll pick one up cheapish, so maybe some advice on this too!
In fact any advice about the outdoor activities (and kit available), that people would recommend would be fab!
i didnt do any multi day walks when i was away due to time constraints.
but i did learn in austrailia they overextimate hugely how long walks etc should take in any info.
im a fairly slow walker, like to enjoy the scenary have many tea breaks and i was taking about a third of the time they suggest you give. trust me walking in the heat of oz was so slow.
just something for you to remeber, but im sure like me you'll plan your own route and learn to take advise as nessary and ignore when required
In Aus, I recommend the Heysen Trail in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia and the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territories which travels along the West MacDonnell ranges. I've done sections of both of them and they are tremendous. I'd love to go back and do the whole length.
You need a permit to go bush (wild) camping but TBH many folk just stop and get their swags out and camp all over the outback. Many folk sleep on the top of their 4x4s and special ute-top tentlets are available to hire. It keeps the killer wildlife away from you...take that threat seriously. Don't underestimate the volume of water that you need to carry, even in winter in the outback. Trails in national parks sometimes have satellite phones on posts at intervals for serious problems. Take care around Aboriginal lands in NT and follow the clearly-posted rules.
I wish I can make this trip as soon as possible too man. my friend did mongolia, china, australia and NZ backpacking last year and they are still telling new stories about it. have fun on your trip
There's not much multi day stuff in Honkers, it's too small.
Decent day walks on Lantau (Lantau Peak, Sunset Peak) and Tai Mo Shan in the NT. HK is quite an urban environment and there are paved paths to the summits and lots of nannying. If you do go walking there, take an extra tee shirt for the return taxi/bus ride. It's quite humid and you'll be in a bit of a state.
thanks everyone, in Australia now, HK was interesting, plenty of walking to be do but there is indeed lots of nannying and the spare t-shirt is a very good idea!
