I'm planning a trip for early July with a couple of friends to somewhere in the high pyrenees. We are ideally looking for:
a fairly challenging longish distance (+-100km) walk,
in a reasonably wild area where we will be able to wild camp
and with some high mountains (ideally 3000m+) along the way which we can take a day or two out to climb.
I would be very grateful for any ideas of areas of the pyrenees which suit these criteria and for any recommendations of peaks which are worthwhile climbing and don't require excessive technical skills and equipment.
Any trip reports would also be much appreciated...
We went in July and apart from well trodden steps up to The Breche De Roland, there were no problems with snow, you would not need anything. There is a hut that serves food, Goriz at the foot of the standard way up Perdido, There is a hut by the Breche that serves food. There is a small supermarket at Gavarnie that is good enough, we had one meal at Goriz and carried food for the rest from Gavarnie. We found water but one place we passed twice about 5 days apart and the plentiful water the first time was reduced to a trickle so it does vary.
Yes, I've just read it - thank you very much. The pictures are absolutely awesome! The walk looks pretty varied which is nice and I was glad to see a fair bit of sun along the way! The area also looks very scenic with some great views.
Roughly how long was the walk which you did because what we ideally want is to combine a sort of backpacking trip (where manage to walk a fair distance over a couple of weeks, wildcamping along the way) with a few fun mountain ascents - (Peridido looks great so hopefully that will be one of them!) Do you think that the walk which you described will suit the sort of trip that we are after?
Distance between 90 and 100 km I think.Four 3000m tops to do Perdido, Taillon,Casque du Marbore and Petit Vignemale. you could include the Anisclo canyon and Nerin to Ordesa if you have time and go back to Cauterets from Bujuarelo by Banos de Panticosa Refuge Respumoso and Refuge Wallon.Loads of choice in that area .Going from Gavarnie by Sarradets to Goriz hut best to wild camp on the Spanish side[water can be had on the path from the Breche to the Collado De Millaris ].Ara valley good wild camping. No camping in the Ordesa canyon below Goriz .Kev Reynolds book 'Walks and Climbs In The Pyrenees ' is good to work out a route.
An alternative would be to start much further east, in the Aiguestortes National Park travelling west giving you the opportunity to climb the two highest Pyreneen peaks , Aneto and Poset. This was the first ever trip I did in the area. In two weeks we got as far as St Lary having crossed the frontier back into France.
Hi, thanks for all the responses. In the end, I have decided to incorporate quite a few of your ideas into the same trip: We will walk over the border from Bagneres de Luchon in France. We will hopefully then climb the 3 highest peaks: Aneto, Posets and Perdido and walk and wild camp in between them, mostly following sections of the HRP and GR11. The scenery around there looks amazing and the peaks themselves should be quite a fun challenge. We will just have to hope that the weather isn't too scorching in the valleys. We are thoroughly looking forward to the trip and I would be more than happy, on my return to give a short report or answer any questions if anyone is interested.
