Rather than the normal advice on pointy mountain routes, i'd like idea's on interesting places to walk where the route takes in historic or wildlife places of interest.

Seldom found anywhere where all the things that tick your boxes come as thick and fast as they do around the Channel Islands.

The canal towpaths around Whalley Bridge, if you like your industrial revolution stuff.
|
 |
 Brecon Beacons?
|
 |
 .... or Norfolk Broads.

I've been to EVERY one of the places mentioned so far... and I'd still have to stick with the Channel Islands. A stroll that you might normally complete in an hour would easily take three hours in the Channel Islands because there's just so much to see along the way. The place has been invaded by everything from woolly mammoths to Hitler, and they all left their mark!

LennyJ1 - Yes I have walked the Cotswold Way and the Thames Path.

Urban walks can rather surprising too. The bigger the city, the more varied the enjoyement and if it has some nice parks, you can have natural interlude. My hometown, Geneva, is very pleasant to walk with some good strolls alongside the lake shore and the Rhone river. Otherwise, I found myself walking a heck of lot when in London and taking detours across one of the many parks was very agreable. I do particularly remember one misty autumn morning in one of the big central parks (can't remember which one now, plenty of big ponds, very central) when you felt a millions miles away from a huge metropolis...

Was tempted to stop in geneva on the way back from doing the TMB last year, may well have to plan a few extra days next time to venture round there.

Do contact me if you plan to do that, I can give you a few tips for some very pleasant strolls (urban and in the countryside just outside it, easily reached by train with vinyards galors and pleasant little inns to stop) or a bit more (scrambling up Saleve, the cliff mountain you can easily see from the town on most day which is reached by bus until the border with France then a bit of approach walking on road until the serious fun starts).

The Loire Valley is packed with historical sights and you can see a bit of wildlife on the river. You can leapfrog the parts you dont want to visit it as a good rail service runs along it. Also walking the Somme battlefields(based in Albert) is also packed with history.
