Hi,  I'm looking for cheap accomodation for 4 of us in Scotland this winter.  Where is the best place to stay and how do I find somewhere for under £300 for 4 self catering??

That's a bit of a wide-open question - where do you want to stay and when ? I'm sure you could find somewhere in Stranraer in the winter for < £300

The problem is I don't know Scotland at all - done Ben Nevis last year but it was during a 3 peaks race so only drove in, ran up and down and drove out again!

Where is the best place to stay to develop some winter skills but get some decent low level rambling in too?  I thought perhaps Aviemore???

I've looked on the web but mostly found £500 luxery accomodation - we want cheap and basic but warm and dry.

Fraoch Lodge is a great hostel - and it is run by a couple of mountain guides who are happy to give advice - or even take you out for a day if you wish - so would be a great base for the Cairngorms, especially as you don't know the area very well. It is also well placed for the Creag Meaghaidh climbing area which can be handy when the Cairngorms weather isn't obliging.

Or try some more hostels:

Depending on the hostel you may have to share a bunkroom with other people, or you sometimes get a family room for the four of you.

Another option is Braemar.  There is a hostel in town itself, and there is also a NTS property in a stately home a bit further on - I'll dig out the details.  Friends of us got married there last year and the place seemed nice.

Found it. The Base Camp is for bigger groups only. The appartments in the main building are here:

but there are no prices up yet for 2011 - looks like they're a bit more than you're looking for though.

the walkhiglands link was brilliant but we've decided Avemore is too expensive.  Have now found a cottage in N/wales with use of pool, jaccuzi, gym and sauna for nearly half the price of Scotland.  Thanks for all your help.
