Walking on La Gomera and El Hierro - my next guidebook - is close to being published.

That means it's time for yet another FREE DRAW for a copy - a chance for an Xtra Xmas present!

They used to say that El Hierro was at the edge of the world, but shortly afterwards, Christopher Colombus sailed past it and found out that it wasn't. El Hierro and La Gomera are the two smallest and westernmost Canary Islands. Walkers have hardly begun to explore El Hierro. Strange, since the island boasts an excellent network of waymarked trails, including a hefty two-day stretch of the GR 131 that climbs from sea-level to 1500m, then drops back to sea-level. It's based on a pilgrimage route that attracts thousands of trekkers for one long day every four years.

La Gomera is already very well-known among walkers, especially German walkers, but not many of them seem to realise the full extent of the newly-waymarked network of trails. Rather annoyingly, the island government produced an excellent map of all the trails, pasted it onto map-boards all over the island, but didn't think to sell copies to visitors! Anyway, there's another hefty two-day stretch of the GR 131, which hops from island to island throughout the Canaries. On La Gomera it climbs from sea-level to 1400m, the drops to sea-level again. There's also the week-long GR 132, which makes a complete circuit around the island, in and out of dozens of deep, steep-sided, canyon-like barrancos.

Check out the Cicerone website and click on all the links to learn more about the book. It currently shows as not available, but an advance copy is available for the draw. There is more information about the book on my website. Both sites contain a list of 45 routes.

Here's the deal... 'terms and conditions' if you like...

1. Entry is open to all OutdoorsMagic members, but ONE ENTRY PER PERSON.

2. Entry is available for two weeks, only through my website Enquiry Form.

3. You don't have to enter your 'real' name, your 'username' will do fine.

4. Give a valid email address, and I'll ask for your 'real' address only if you win.

5. Under the 'enquiry' field, just put 'La Gomera' so that all entries come together.

6. I hate spam, so I'm not going to spam you, and all emails will be deleted later.

7. The draw is entirely random, so everyone has the same chance to win.

8. The winner will be notified by email, and announced here on 20/12/10.

9. Yes, I'll sign the book, add an inscription if required, and post it to any UK address.

10. Overseas entries are welcome, but you'll have to contribute to the postage.

And that's enough 'terms and conditions', except for...

"I reserve the right to be wrong!"

This is intended as a 'fun' draw, so please don't take it too seriously. If it's 'fun' from my point of view, then I'll offer more books in due course as and when they're published.

(Don't forget that the draw for a copy of 'Walking on La Palma' is still current until 13/12/10. Even if you entered the draw for that book, you can still enter for this one.)

GOOD LUCK!

Matt... with so many Cicerone titles now available as eBooks, including these two Canary Islands guides... you can stack them up on your computer instead of your shelf.

Hi Paddy,
Looking forward to reading your new book; as you say, the magic little island of El Hierro remains largely undiscovered and utterly unspoilt. I seem to be the only person promoting hill walking holidays there! I have brought 110 groups there so far and am celebrating ten years (2001 - 20119)of walking with groups there - and offering ten per cent off!
Continued success!

Hi Shane...

I'm giving El Hierro a total of 18 days of walking, totalling 260km, and of course it includes the GR 131 from one end of the island to the other. I hope that's a good enough effort for the smallest, most remote and least-visited of the Canary Islands. I love the place, and while I was checking all my routes, I only met four other walkers. One of those was a German woman (famously tipped me off about the Arctic Circle Trail), and the others were a Spanish family... dad, mum and daughter. They embraced me like a long-lost son, and were even more amazed than I was that such a splendid island had hardly any walkers on it!

With 110 groups in 10 years... you must have dealt with almost everyone who ever walked there. Keep up the good work!

(If you can't wait for the book to be published, or for the Free Draw to take place on 20th December, it's already available as a downloadable eBook from the Cicerone site.)

Reminder that the draw for La Palma will take place on 13th December. Get your email in!

Cheers Paddy,

Funnily enough I got an invite to La Gomera recently but I politely declined...

Now for a nice bit of walking... the appeal is a lot more obvious!

I can imagine what La Gomera looks like from the sea... mostly cliffs... lots of dry-mouthed barrancos with bouldery grey beaches... and a mere handful of towns and villages.

In other words... yeah... stay on terra firma!

Question for Paddy or possibly John , now he has the book.

I am thinking of  hiking the GR132 in March. I've done as much planning as possible prior to the book coming out and am willing to wait until Jan 15th to finalise expedition. There is however one thing nagging me which I would like answered asap and that is accommodation on route. Does it exist ? At what  cost ? Are there rates for single travellers  or should I bring a friend.  Alternately can one/should one  do the route by baseing  themselves in one place and bussing each day. If so, where is  the best place for such a base?

Thanks

Pedro,

I hope Paddy can answer you as I won't start dipping into his book until I've finished the next few on my pile and can enjoy it properly!

John... Dunno how the Royal Mail managed that!

Pedro... I'm not at home, so I don't have access to every last scrap of information, so you'll have to cope with whatever's left rattling around in my memory.

First... there is accommodation around the GR 132... expensive hotels, cheap hotels and even cheaper pensions. It's common for prices quoted to be for the room, rather than per person, so if you take a friend then in most places you can share the cost. In March you should be able to turn up on doorsteps unannounced and get a room. It's worth making the tourist office in San Sebastian your first port of call, as they keep an accommodation list covering the whole island, so you'll have plenty of contacts to pick from.

You can cover the GR 132 by commuting to and from sections of the route by bus, but you need to get hold of an up-to-date timetable from the bus station in San Sebastian. Don't trust any timetable info on the internet, because it WILL be wrong! Even the timetable they give you at the bus station will have lots of times crossed out and written in, and it's always a good idea to be at rural bus stops half an hour before the bus is due. San Sebastian is actually a bad base for bus transport, as you can't even begin to travel to some places until 10am. The mountain village of Chipude, on the other hand, is excellent, as most of the island's buses come through it, and the Hotel Sonia is an excellent place well used to dealing with walkers who want early breakfasts and late meals.

I had no problem walking the route from village to village, but La Dama has no accommodation, so if you break there, then you have to arrive in time to catch a bus up to Chipude, and you have to be ready for an early bus back down to La Dama to continue.

Apart from that, the route involves crossing lots of dry, rocky canyons, which are quite spectacular, but also pretty difficult when they come thick and fast.
