Sometimes the gale force wind and torrential rain keeps them at bay

There are no such things as scottish beasts, except perhaps for a few which have escaped from captivity.

April/May and September, Les, are your best bets. Weather wise and midge wise

You can expect midges in July unless it is windy as mentioned above. It is difficult to get away from them unless you can find a wee sea breeze or sometimes being higher up helps. However I have experienced them on the summit of Bruach na Frithe on the Black Cuillin.

went in may and had them on most of the summits.
But we did have 8 fantastic days with blue skies .
As said before wind or rain are a must.

I, like most Scots 'outdoors' folk, camp (when i'm not injured) all year round. Learn to deal with the wee bastards. If it wasn't for midgies, all those beautiful west coast beaches, with their white sands, would have hotels built on them. I love the wee terrors!

Get ahead net. They don't cost or weigh much and, oh! what a relief to cover your head when the wee beasties are out.

Yes, they can be quite prolific in July on Skye, especially in the evening, far too many of them for you to enjoy sitting outside.

Midge nets are great. Make sure the mesh is small enough that they don't crawl through. Also remember to put it on before going outside as there is no point putting one on if they are already crawling all over your face and in your hair as you'll just trap them inside the hood.

I've always understood that Skye midges are the very worst of the lot.  July?  Hmmm - good luck!  Rum is possibly second only to Skye on the midge front.  But tolerable if windy - and if not camping, you can at least get away from the wretched things.  But not ideal to be forced inside on a summer eve!
