I am just reading "Dark Peak Hikes - Off the Beaten Track" by Doug Brown and published by Sigma Leisure in 2006.

In it the author mentions that Joe Brown created a circular course whilst on the staff of the Whitehall Centre. This course was of "about 20-points" over "about 32 km", but then discusses this as being a 27km walk.

Apparently there are two types of co-ordinate (6-figure grid references and bearings followed by distance in yards).

The instructions 2" high and chiseled into walls etc.

Some coordinates are given, for example, the shrine (029753) is one, which has been rebuilt, so now has its coordinates missing. According to this book, these are 188 284, which is 188° and 284 yards. The author couldn't find another point near Errwood Hall, and so gives the instructions for this as 007747, so that the trail doesn't "grind to a halt".

There is another on Cowlow Lane, on the other side of the road from, and just downhill from the access to Castle Naze and near the lay-by (SK052786).

These are the only coordinates that I have found, but I don't have them to hand at the moment.

Does anyone have any more information?

Regards the Joe Brown navigation trail in Derbyshire mentioned in the book Dark Peak Hikes. All 20 clues are in place. The 'missing' one on the way to Errwood hall has been found. The problem was that the clue leading to it is inaccurate. It should be 010741 (no GPS when course set up).

A further complication is that there are 2 more clues in the area that are not part of the course. On Shining Tor at 99439/73740 (on rocks) and 99460/73740 (by stile) clue both 995759; and by Bonsal Cob at 01778/75910  clue 202 x 970.

I first saw the course mentioned in The Peak District magazine. The length of the course was given as 17 miles but I make it 20 miles. In the revised edition of Dark Peak Hikes, due to be published shortly, this error is corrected.

Hi Doug

There is a revised edition of your Dark Peak Hikes due to be published shortly? I wonder are there any new routes in there?

Many thanks for the first edition, that was an excellent publication: a lot of adventurous routes in there and probably the closest thing to a scrambles guide for the Dark Peak. I've long been thinking Cicerone could use something similar.

Rgds

Andrew

Revised edition of Dark Peak Hikes has a few updates on things like aircraft wreck sites found since 1st book published and a few corrections but no new routes. 1st edition out of print, 2nd should! be out in a month or two.

To read updates on Dark Peak & White Peak aircraft wreck sites + more photos of routes described in the book I have a website. To access it google Dark Peak Hikes Doug Brown and the website should be mentioned.

Many thanks for your interest.
