Next year will be my 50th birthday and to mark this I am planning a 3 week trip to the himalayas in the Autumn (2012).

I am a little unsure as to which region to go to. Trouble is - the more I look, the more confused I get. I am looking at 2 areas - Annapurna & Everest.  If it's Everest then the Gokyo Lakes and Everest BC trek appeals, if it's Annapurna then I have a more open mind.

- Does anyone have any recomendations?

- I have been looking at the UK based agencies - is this the best way for a first (and likely only) trip or would it be OK to employ a local company, whether it be before I go or once I get there?

Any advise would be appreciated

Hi Doug,

Sounds like a good 50th present to yourself - I'm sure you'll have a great time. You're certainly planning well in advance, so you have time to research a little before taking the plunge. If you are sure that its the Nepalese Himalya you want to visit, then I'd suggest you have a peep at TrekInfo website, and specifically explore their forums (link at the top of their homepage) - lots of first timer questions asked and answered there, and lots of route suggestions. If you fancy looking at the Indian Himalaya, then the IndiaMike website is very good - once again, their forums are where you'll find the best info. Its also worth perusing the Trekking Company catalogues for ideas - KE Adventure, The Mountain Company, Jagged Globe etc - Google is your friend.  As I'm sure you're aware, autumn is peak trekking season in Nepal, so expect the Everest and Annapurna areas to be very busy.

Booking with a UK Agency is easy and hassle-free - but the most expensive way to do it. Using local agencies is cheaper, but takes a day or so to organise in-country, and the quality is a bit of an unknown - from excellent to awful.  Pretty much all of the "teahouse" treks in Nepal can easily be done without the need for a guide or porters, if you wish. All have Pros and Cons, discussed ad nauseam in the TekInfo forums. Whichever way you decide to do it, you'll have a wonderful trip.

Everest Base Camp with Exodus is a MUST!!!  Also been to Annapurna area (less touristy and quieter trails) - but nothing beats your first glimpse of Everest.

I'm not a camper  so the teahouses were just great.

Trip of a lifetime - but go in November when the trails are quieter and the skies are clear.

Happy birthday!

PS brilliant gear shop is Shona's in kathmandu for down sleeping bag and down jacket - cheap and cosy - served me well on 2 trips to Himalaya and up Kili.

Hi Doug, I not familiar with the Nepalese Himalya but know more places for mountaineering and trekking in Tibet. I also can tell other scenic spots in Tibet.

If you need some relevant information, I can offer some help.

Many years ago went on the TGO trek to Sikkim in India to do the foothills of Kangchenjunga. It was well organised by KE Adenture Travel. If I was to return for another Himalyan Trek I would use them again.

A bit out of date though.

Doug, I would have a browse of the guide books. Trailblazer and Footprint guides are a favourite of mine but I am sure Lonely Planet are also comprehensive. Have a good review and pick your area and then look at options. UK or local firm debate is neverending with pro's and con's for each. If choosing a UK firm Mountainlesley seems to be a fan of Exodus. Other firms are also well regarded from very large (e.g. Exodus) with huge variety of trips to small (e.g. KE, somewhat more adventurous trips available as standard it seems, smaller groups) to tiny (I met 'Terry Crosby , Travel and Trek' out there and he seems to be well regarded judging by business he gets from Education Authorities etc). Find what suits your budget and aspirations. Enjoy the research - a good way to stretch your 3 weeks holiday out into more of an experience.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Lots to take on board, think about and then decide. While time is on my side I would like to get something finalised sooner rather than later.

Regards
