Fuel for Japan and Taiwan

Hi there,
A friend is off to Taiwan to visit family in the summer. Knowing it is seriously hilly and there are great walks in Japan, I thought I'd tag along! I normally use meths (alcohol stove) abroad as you can buy fuel (or surgical spirits in Muslim countries) everywhere, and a canister stove for an overnight in the UK. Does anybody know how easy is it to buy meths/alcohol in Japan and Taiwan?

Any tips for great walks in Taiwan - there seems to be less info for Taiwan, although I have found a few blogs and some day walks around Taipei

In Japan you can definitely get meths in Tokyu Hands art/craft stores and most likely also in general camping/outdoors stores (as I know they sell Trangias and their clones). Canister gas (EN417 fitting) by all the usual brands is available in the camping stores and some DIY shops.

I certainly saw some gas canisters in a shop in Taipei, not sure of the fitting type though. Probably best to go with a puncture/screw in canister adapter. I don't recall seeing any meths at all. You might be better off bringing a burner that can cope with petrol, or as a last resort, esbit as you'll be able to fly in with that.

Pretty sure you're not allowed to take any kind of fuel on an airplane these days, including solid fuels. So while they are unlikely to spot it if you are carrying esbit/hexamine tablets, if you do get caught I am sure they can make you pay...
