Mark Weir, controversial owner of the Honister Slate Mine, has been killed in a helicopter crash. http://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/news/8897703.Man_dies_in_Lake_District_helicopter_crash/

My thoughts are with his friends and family.

So sad,  can only assume the bad weather was a factor.

I am sure his legacy, Honister Slate Mine, is a good testament to the character of the man. Afterall it has kept an industry in the Lakes that was once so strong. IMHO it is important the industrial legacy of the Lakes be maintained and he had a good hand in that despite his more controversial activities and comments.

Plus the Mine's potato and leek soup and a cup of tea is a lifesaver on a blustery day.

I wonder what the future of the Honister Mine will be? One of the tributes said that Mark Weir was Honiston - is there anyone with the necessary enthusiasm to take it on?

I just saw him on the TV last week, seemed like a nice fellow.

He said the Slate mine was his life.

His mother is a formidable woman and runs the mine tours - we did one on a very rainy day once. She tells stories about his cock-ups when he first took it over, before he knew properly what he was doing. She  called Fleetwith "Our Mountain".
