I've one thing to say about that new image, Mikey.
Get a room!! ;oP

Mike - you might already know this, but there's actually a very romantic story about Beinn na Caillich - a warrior princess is supposed to be buried under the cairn at the top, so the cold winds of her Norwegian homeland would blow across her grave. Personally I think she was just knackered.
I was a bit fed up on my climb up there, as I was overtaken at speed by a guy from Broadford who runs up and down it several times a day when he's training for the Glamaig race.
(With apologies to the poor lad who wanted tips on climbing)

Some pics from the ridge at my rather poor effort at a website (sorry it's a cut and paste job):

I have decided to start climbing with a friend and we have done a little before but generaly regard our selfs as beginers so we have joined a local club with lots of experienced members. We are lucky to have lots of climbing in Cornwall even if we dont have the mountains to go with it.
Our local wall which I havent visited yet is found by word of mouth and is in a farm yard barn and costs £1:50 for as long as you like.

I have just had an excellent week learning to climb at Plas-Y-Brenin in Snowdonia. I started from no experience at all, to being competent to second upto severe level (4a/4b 4c at a pinch) and have been lead on Diff grade rock (though it was little more than an exposed scramble).
I would thoroughly recommend PYB for anyone wanting to learn climbing.
Now my problem is finding someone to lead at this relatively low level. -anyone from OM into climbing?
I also need to buy some kit: shoes, harness, crabs/belay device and a lid. More expense and nowhere to put the stuff when I get it.

 mark...
How much was the course?
|

I attended the 5 day Rock climbing under your own steam residential course. It was quite expensive at £410, but I cannot fault the instruction. Towards the end of the course some people had an instructor each, but usually it was 1 instructor to 2 students. Details are here. In a nutshell, the course is designed to introduce you to climbing and make you a 'competent second' at or around the severe level depending on your ability of course. Just for the record, I have no connection with PYB except for being a satisfied customer.

Mark, I wouldn't worry about S being to low a level. I lead up to HS and have a fantastic time. If I could get out more often then I'm sure I could push my grade up but to be honest there are loads of excellent climbs around that are VD and S and at the moment I’m more than happy to enjoy these. I think one of the problems with the climbing magazines is that they give the impression that everybody is climbing E2/3. This is not the case with plenty of people having a great time on the lower grades.
If you get hold of a copy of <a href=” http://www.needlesports.com/acatalog/Mail_Order_Classics_139.html”>Classic Rock you'll see what I mean with loads of fantastic pictures and articles. Really inspiring!

Bugger, forgot the closing tag. Try this <a href=' http://www.needlesports.com/acatalog/Mail_Order_Classics_139.html'>Classic Rock

 Or maybe this <a href=” http://www.needlesports.com/acatalog/Mail_Order_Classics_139.html”>Classic Rock

OK what's going on! I've never had a problem posting links before!!!!!
|
 |
Or even Classic Rock :) Yes, I l flicked through this book at pyb and was impressed. I just need to find a forgiving partner to lead while I gain experience. Suppose I should hit the clubs.
|
 |
Cheers Mark. Obviously the problem with becoming a manager - you loose the ability to do even the simplest of tasks! :(
Yeah, I'd hit your local club - you bound to find loads of partners there. Other than that get to your local wall. Where abouts do you live in the country?
Did you get any contact details for people who were on your course? They're probably excellent people to get together with as you're all singing from the same song sheet. Some of my best friends & climbing partners are people that I've met at through places like PYB

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm on the wirral, so fantastic for Snowdonia, not bad for the lakes or the peaks. Walls are in Liverpool and Chester so I've no excuses there either!
I am keeping in touch with a few of my cohorts, though currently we are all in the same boat, young, keen, good at drinking beer and in need of a competent lead climber to keep us alive!
I'll look in the BMC to see what clubs are in the area. I have also discovered ukclimbing.com which looks good. To be honest, I'm a bit nervous about walking into the club and saying or doing the wrong thing!
I must do something though as I thoroughly enjoyed not falling off the rock (well not falling off too often) and getting to the top is a fantastic buzz.

 |
 £410...yikes!
Problem is both me and my wife would go on it, so £820 is getting a bit steep!
I'm just thinking of joining a local club like yourself but like you I've only done a little outdoors climbing, mainly top roped climbs in the Lakes/Peaks.
Would really like to lead some Diff or maybe V/Diffs, I'm just getting into more serious scrambling too.
|
 |
Mark - I would be more worried about 'walking' into UKClimbing.com. They eat people alive on there at times....

 |
Jeannie, Thanks, for this warning, I suspected so when I followed some threads back.
|
 |
Mark, I just told my new club what a novice I am and they have been more than happy to help and advice. Everyone has to start somewhere and I should think most clubs are friendly.
I have also discoverd that my local wall, which is in a farm yard barn just a convenient couple of miles away is a no no as the owner has just come out of prison for sex offences against women. It was good to be warned as we had planed to go.
