It has been two years since I looked at their kit and maybe I caught them on an off day, but judging by the positive reviews above I will be taking a look in one of their shops soon - has anyone had any experience of light-weight waterproof/breathable over trousers, or am I asking a little much!

I fear that you will be dissappointed. The only waterproof over trousers I've ever seen there are these which look strictly for emergency use to me.

But what do I know. Seems they now do these http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/forclaz-900-overtrousers-22713733/

Jebus. I'd forgotten what a dog of a website they have. Also, worth calling ahead because their ability to maintain stcklevels seems to have fallen off a cliff. That said they seem to do a few pairs of waterproof trousers: http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/bionnassay-overtrousers-700-96307031/ http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/forclaz-100-overtrousers-22713638/ ...all available under "light jackets" - http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/men-hiking-light-and-waterproof-jackets-3915503/

Yes, I must admit to being a tad lazy.....specially as I have a connection which isnt even up to dial-up speeds (its a location issue) so browsing becomes almost a dream rather than reality...thanks for those guys.....I may even get to see the pages before I find the nearest shop!.....stranger things have been known

Based on what Sambo says I would think that the bionnassay overtrousers would be the ones that would be the "top end" model. Bionnassay is the brand name they use for all the climbing related "kit". In effect this means any items that have been specifically designed for climbing and mountaineering. This therefore means they are often also the best choice for hillwalking and the like. I have looked at the current range of Bionnassay Waterproof/Breathable jackets and tried them on in the Stockport shop. The quality of the design and the materials looks good. The reason I have never bought one is the fact they use an "own brand" fabric, Novadry, and I have been unsure if the breathability would match that of fabrics like Goretex or Event.

yes own brand fabrics have always been a concern for me too but I managed to have a quick flick around their web site last night and it appears most of the 'high end' products have a two year guarantee not great if you get caught out on the hills but a kinda fail safe way to try them out- lol trouble is I can't these days pootle around the M60 to stockport!

oops...or log it as a business trip to b'n'q

That's worth noting. Their low price stuff is great for kids. Lots of low price bargains to be had on offers, I like the look of their top end waterproofs but I think I'd rather go for a sale price 'name fabric' than an unkown quantity. The local Decathlon offered to let some of our club members trial gear and provide reviews, but when push came to shove they didn't go ahead. Pity, it would have been interesting to see how it fared.

Grendel says: I like the look of their top end waterproofs but I think I'd rather go for a sale price 'name fabric' than an unkown quantity. Yes I would have to agree with you there Grendel, although most of the previous posts are saying that in general it is good stuff.....dependent on how low the price goes for 'name' versus 'own brand' I guess! Great shame and almost ominous that they didn't let you test their equipment though, and I do wonder if its a tell tale......

My lads have been out in heavy rain in the Quecha waterproof jackets with no problems. The kids can't really tell you how breathable the jackets are though so hard to tell what the performance was really like. And the material of the jackets feels a bit heavy compared to a high end stuff.

Was in Decathlon at the weekend. A lot of their winter gear is on sale. Fleeces 3 to 5 euros, thermals, a merino l/s top for 8 euros. Softshells for about 30. etc.
I've had a fair bit of gear from them in the last couple of years, some good, some not so good.
I've a couple of their tents which are great for holidays/car camping etc. I'm not sure I'd really want to take 'em up a mountain though. Camping accesories like shovels, spare pegs, mallets etc. are good value too.
I'm using their walking sock at the moment happily and a bargain 22l day pack which gives me a sweaty back but aside from that is fantastic value for 19 euros, it has a hydration pouch, decent straps, enough pockets and compresses flat against my back.
Their wicking t-shirts have generally been useless and I had a horrible cheap waterprooof from them when my was stuck in a shipping container. No good.
As most have said above, their cheap stuff is cheap but not that great, and their expensive stuff is far better quality, but in the UK you can pick up branded stuff in sales for similar prices.
They're alright in a pinch basically, and you can pick up a few bargains there, but they aren't a patch on US own brand stores like REI or EMS in my experience.

I have seen a few people on on the mountains with all the gear, their kids walking along behind with a pair of cheap trainers and a pair of football shorts, total madness. As for only trusting branded material, go out on a mountain on a cold day and you will still get wet with a good gortex jacket nothing keeps you 100% dry, well maybe oilskins will but not the best for hiking.
