I am considering a Trangia alcohol burning stove, well actually the old Swedish army one. Most of my cooking has been on fires and little gas burners. The Swedish army stove seems like a solution which would be good for use with fires and liquid fuel. Anyway my question is how much fuel would I need to cook for say 5 days for two people. I don't particularly want to carry litres of meths around. Has anyone got any fuel consumption ideas?

Thank you from stew www.70north.co.uk.

There are a few factors, but to give you some rough idea, one of my home made burners will boil 500ml of water on 20ml of meths, in a caldera clone.

To be honest i've never owned a trangia, there are many here who have though, i don't suppose it will take long for someone with more experience to come along.

In answer to your question - quite a lot of meths to make up for the weight of your Trangia setup compared to a coke-can stove and Cone.

I've used the Trangia burners for years.Depending on your
stove type, a good average to boil 500mls of water from
cold on a cold day <40deg.> requires 20ml. meths. I've found
their model 25 to be the best, although I generally use
my own make of stove.I do like the ability to seal the
burner after use when not all the meths. have been
burned off.Cheers.

5 days x 2 people...well

what you "cooking"...just boiling up water or cooking from scratch?  Makes a difference.

and why does your signature  incude a link to a site advertising professional guiding services?

Just curious....

That was going to be my question, too.  What sort of cooking/type of meals, how many cooked meals per day, how much hot water, etc?  Makes a huge difference...

Minimalist approach: one hot meal per day, made by cosy-cooking a dehydrated meal.  Cold drinks.

'Gourmet' approach: three hot meals per day, prepared from fresh ingredients, with foods that require long cooking (pasta, etc), hot drinks throughout the day.

captain paranoia's approach: hot oat cereal and hot chocolate drink for breakfast, dehydrated meal and coffee/tea evening meal, cold drinks and snacks during the day.  Requires about 2l of boiled water per day, which with a caldera clone and red bull burner works out at 60ml per day.  Allowing 75ml per day for spare gives 375ml fuel for two days.  Per person, although there may be small savings when cooking for two.

I know this may not be much use to you, but it takes 8ml of fuel to make a bowl of popcorn. (Its part of an a-level practical about super heating starch we do at work. Its the only way we can do it and let the students eat the end product)

Popcorn?!?! Brilliant! How does it work, just put a bit of butter in a pan & heat it, or tin foil or is there some funky trick? 8 ml doesn't sound much and it would be brilliant to do at my next camp!

Popcorn & trangias is a classic!

Bit of oil in the bottom of the pan & some popping corn (not the microwave type). Heat & try to keep it moving about so it doesn't burn (bit tricky this bit as it's hard to keep the lid on and use the pan grip & not easy to shake about with the windshield, but hey).

Wait until popping starts to slow noticeably, then remove from heat.

Sprinkle bit of sugar or salt on & a real treat at the end of a long day's walk.

I've never measured it - some! It expands a fair bit so don't put too much in. You can always do more if you want.

I have seen someone take the stuff out of one of those microwave packs. The salt one worked okay (can't remember if they put the whole pack in - if they did I would imagine it must have been the big pan). The butter one burned and made a mess in the pan that took some getting off in a stream with moss!

Try it at home first to get an idea of how much.

The cost of a Trangia storm cooker varies from retailer to retailer. You'd be better off googling for the answer. Clas Ohlson does a lighter, cheaper 1-2 man version which I found as good as Trangia but, although it's heavier, I still use a Trangia burner.
