Going with a group soon to do the path. Any real ale pubs we should seek out ? We stay in Dundee, St Andrews, Crail, Lower Largo, Kinghorn and Sth Queensferry.

Staying in Dundee I'd suggest my personal watering whole, Mennie's.  The beer's good and the whisky shelf is particularly fine (try the Linkwood, if you don't already have preferences of your own).  You can do old-fashioned pub stuff like hear yourself think and have a blether in a normal voice too.

I don't drink in St. A's so I don't know what might be good pubs, but for ice cream can highly recommend Janetta's.  And on the subject of ice-cream, in Broughty Ferry Visocchi's on Gray Street is particularly good too (no web site, easy to find though).

If you like your fish suppers then the Anstruther Fish Bar may well be worth calling off at.  Been a while since I partook, but the last one I had there was very good.

The Chain Walk is a splendid wheeze.  Have fun!

Pete.

Thanks Peter ,the Chain walk does look fun.

Can you advise in where we can get a tide table for the route, the beach walking is inviting. Coastguards are mentioned to get a table are there a few stations about.

EasyTide is the UKHO/Admiralty online prediction service.

You can only get certain named spots but I'd think Anstruther or Methil should be close enough.

IIRC there's a coatguard station in St. A's, and I'd think you could call them up and ask.

Pete.

Another good pub in Dundee is The Phoenix. It's a traditional bar, with a good range of beers. The bar food is pretty decent too.

Hello SD,

Coincidentaly, I'm doing the Fife Coastal Walk next week, starting from South Queensferry on the 17th, ending in Dundee on the 21st. There are 6 of us doing it to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust. We are camping at Kinghorn, Leven, Crail and St Andrews.

If you're on the path at the same time as us, mind an' wave

Mur

Back safe and sound, few drops of rain and a bit breezy. The walk is great, myself and two others did the Chain walk around the rocks at Kincraig Point; not to be missed if the tide is right and you are sure of foot and okay with heights.

We found the Phoenix in Dundee fine, already forgetting the details but we found good beer in the Ardgowan Hotel in St Andrews ,the Balcomie Links Hotel, Crail and our final night was in the The Hawes Hotel right under the Forth Rail Bridge ,several real ale beers on offer there including 'Proper Job.'

We are on our 7th week long trips to Scotland (one per year) and in that time we have found real ale easier to find. Contrary to popular belief we do go for the walking.
