Living in this world of McD's, and KFC it is hardly surprising we have such a general dislike of activites which incorporate exercise!
However it's not quite as conclusive as it may at first appear. A good piece of journalism, but if we really read what it says:
"32 per-cent of Britons would refuse to take a ten-minute stroll"
so 2 out of 3 Brits have no problem with that at all!
"only 15 per-cent of Britons expected to do anything active over the May Bank holiday"
Well I didn't do expect I would do anything too active myself. I admit there are other reasons behind that, but isn't that always the case? In the end I did go out bouldering, but that wasn't planned until Saturday evening!
"the government's new exercise strategy, suggests we should all do 30 minutes exercise at least five times a week"
Ummm... well I think of myself as a fairly fit, healthy, active person, but I wouldn't go so far as to say I do 5 seperate sessions, of any form of exercise anywhere near 30 minutes. In fact an average week (not one of these one's after the exams have finished), might have included climbing indoors once or maybe twice, outdoors once, maybe twice, and a little bit of walking to the shops/lectures/friend's house/pubs or clubs.
"only 25 per-cent travelling to the countryside 'most weekends'"
There are reasons behind it. However that's not taking into account the fact that they have multitudes of gyms, and sports centre's. So they're not the outdoors, but they're doing some excercise at least!
"Scots manage a whopping 79 per-cent"
'cos one of the most beautiful places in all of the UK is on their backdoor!
And to quote "Cynical? Moi?"... most definately.
BTW Jon. I'm not havinga dig at you. Just TNF and the people who are stupid enough to think that this little bit of research is informative, or useful!

 Wow that was long!

 |
 Get on your soapbox boyyo!!

 ...where's me chips...?
|
 |
only 25 per-cent travelling to the countryside 'most weekends' -
let's be thankful for that - there are far too many folk cluttering the place up already. 97% of the 25% are of course travelling in family saloons mechanically limited to 38 mph and welded to a white tin box.

When I read this I nearly dropped my super-sized takeaway right in the drive-thru. Cheek of them.

Oh, and why are they always in front of me on the A5 to Snowdonia. grrrr

Its a few hundred yards from our staff car park to the hospital, a few mimutes walk, and there is a free mini bus shuttling staff to and from the building. There are a few who have genuine mobility problems or have heavy stuff to carry but mostly its people who are perfectly capable of walking, 18yr old students ect. This is your taxes paying for this.
Talk about healer heal thyself!

I went to a meeting the other day and I have never seen so many douoble chins in all my life in one place.
I also have to say that having now lived in the south of the country and the north, there is a definite divide on the obesity front. There are a lot more overweight people in the north of England than there are in the south. What is that all about?? There are more mountians up here, you'd think everyone would spend more time outdoors and be fitter.....
|
 |
No... it just means that there are fewer gyms to go to, and the shops are further away, so people are more likely to drive.
Maybe.
|
 |
Maybe ( just maybe ) people with mountains nearby take them for granted therefore dont enjoy them as much the people who live further away do??
Call this a definite maybe......
|
 |
Most of the locals - those who were born and bred - in West Cumbria have never ever been up the fells. At work whenever I mention that I spent most of my weekend on the fells they look at me in horror and tell me that I'm mad!!!
Maybe it is a case that they take the fells for granted, but I think it's also a lot to do with their attitude to life.

slimmer dahn sarf cos we ain't got no monies for food - all dosh spent on putting a roof over our heads. and the price of beer..........

I agree Lorraine. I live on the edge of the Ribble Valley and I cannot imagine not wanting to get out there and experience and enjoy it but i know so many people who never move from their village except to go to an over populated and commercial holiday resort!
I blame football!

I think it's an image thing too. Having lived in Oxford where the cult of image is everything and who a person actually is (i.e. their personality, not what they look like or thier job title etc.) is not so important. People in the north are less concerned with image and more concerned with whether a person is decent, kind, loyal, tolerant etc.
I'm not saying that everyone in the south is shallow as a puddle, that's not the case but I think more people are aware of image and how they are perceived.

Blimey, that shut everyone up didn't it....was I getting too serious???
