I will be based in Langdale for a week next month and looking for advice on walks suitable for dogs (spaniel and lab)

Helm Crag, Bowfel & Crinkle Crags seem fine but havingnever been there any advice would be great

Cheers

Mike

Trouble my dog use to have was sore paws scrambling around the rocks.Couple of long walks and they would be red raw.Maybe because i live in the north downs which are mainly sandy/soft soils? If hot i use to pick walks with plenty of water on.

Our GSD did langedale pikes a few years back. Our current Rottie has done a few Lakeland walks- castle crag and striding edge being the best so far- with no problem until she did Fairfield horseshoe which she ended up limping the last mile due to sore paws. I was told to try paw wax from pets at home next time.

Also a harness can help with stiles.

Sometimes I have to dog sit daughter's Jack Russell. Apart from choosing a route with water (unless I am prepared to carry it) biggest issue are sore paws.  He'll do 20Km easy, paws allowing.

Except, of course, being a Russell, I can always throw him into my rucksack...unlike a Rottie.

Harness for styles is good too.

Biggest problem I find (owning a Lab) are Stiles. Some paths like the one up Dungeon Ghyll has dog friendly ones whereas the path up to red screes from the Kirkstone Pass (Ambleside end) didnt, and trying to throw a Lab over those was fun.

If they can do the Crinkle Crags abd Bowfell then there should be no problem anywhere in the Lakes. When we first completed the 214 Fells listed by Wainwright our Jack Russell/Manchester Terrier cross did them with us.

REgards,

Dave
