Starting out?

Rodney, there's nothing wrong with your way of camping, at times ....

but all the problems you find with wild camping are perfectly solveable:

- kit (tent, mat, sleeping bag, stove and pots) doesn't have to weigh a lot to be perfectly comfortable. You might even find room for a chair-kit to convert your sleeping mat .

- Food needn't be basic. I know a lot of posts here give the impression that wild camp food consists of boil-in-bag gloop and/or pot noodles, but there's nothing to stop you carrying better quality items and being creative about your recipes, or (better still imo) home-dehydrate your own favourites to take.

- water, don't carry it, camp by it, or if you must carry it, pick it up as late in the day as possible. We find around 2 litres per person deals with our overnight requirements - rehydrating the home-cooked food, drinks, and washing up (you don't need vast amounts of water for this).

- toilet, sure there's debate about the best method across all conditions, but basically either dig a hole and bury it, or get a leak-proof, rigid container and pack it out (as an example, they issue suitable items for snowholing on the Cairngorm plateau so that it isn't Crapsville Central up there when the snow melts!
