I've finally persuaded my wife to go camping for a 2nd time (the first was for a weekend last summer), and part of the agreement would be that we got new sleeping bags and mats.

We're only ever likely to go for a couple of nights at a time 2 or 3 times a year at most, over the spring/summer/early autumn months, so I don't really want to spend a fortune on kit that will not get that much use. The bags (along with the rest of our kit) will be transported by car, so size/weight isn't really an issue. The one thing that is however is that despite the fact I run very warm when walking, I'm always cold at night whenever I camp, and my wife is similar. Consequently I'm looking for something a little warmer than the average 2 season bag.

Having had a look around, these seem like they might be an option. http://www.spraywaycamping.com/products.php?product=3

Has anyone any opinions or could offer a suitable alternative? I'm budgeting around £50 per bag ideally. Similarly, what would people recommend re mats? I've simply used a foam roll mat in the past, but would like a little more insulation and comfort without having the bouncyness of an old fashioned airbed. Help please!

Transported by car?

A double air mattress from Argos and one (or more) duvets from home. Pillows too. Seriously.

But if you really feel the cold, get some cheap roll-mats to stick underneath the airbed (and give you a warmer, more comfy floor to the tent). Or even a offcut of carpet.

Yup, get some cheap sleeping bags and then kip under a duvet too, you can then kick it off or crawl back in as required. You don't have to do any trading off if your going in your car.

Thank you all for your replies. When I said size & weight wasn't an issue however, I was thinking in terms of carrying weight around as if I were walking. I drive a Mazda MX5, so if I were to put duvets in the boot, I'd be leaving the tent, cooking equipment & clothing etc behind!

Hey gazza, there is always ALPKIT (www.alpkit.com). They have lots of different sizes and thickness of airmats at good prices (£25-£60) and from what I understand they are pretty good. I have one of their down sleeping bags and it is amazing! It is twice your budget but will definitely keep you warm (From £100). But it is down which will keep you very warm. Its well worth a look. And, excellent customer service

hi

We are new to car-camping this year. We have a double air-bed (not new - cheap and some years old). We bought an Outwell double sleeping bag £54 from GoOutdoors. Room enough for a comfortable sleep, or layer up a bit when cold. It packs down quite small too. I'll an a link if I can find it.

if you are always cold when camping at night it is probably because of the mats you are sleeping on.

If I have fallen off my mat in the night I am freezing.

Also you might find yourself leaning against the side of the tent so you are getting drenched?

The answer isnt spending loads on sleeping bags. The air bed idea is really good, you can vacuum pack them to save space.

If you are still cold, wear a fleece to bed? Or a warm hat? and socks?

That's what I do and I am boiling.

In the end we bought a Vango double self inflating mat (I hate airbeds, far too bouncy to sleep on!) and a couple of the Sprayway Challenger 350 sleeping bags I posted about above. Good nights sleep were had by us both; though we both got a bit warm once the sun came up on one of the mornings, we were fine once we'd unzipped our bags, and past experience tells me I'd rather be warm and able to cool myself than cold and not able to warm up.

Thanks to all for your comments!
