So, my other half is running away to the US for a week or so at the beginning of June, leaving me to my own devices. I feel like going somewhere that at least approximates some wilderness, preferably with mountains (or at the very least, cliffs) that isn't too expensive to get to from Cambridge. A few days of self-supported hiking would be ideal, and spending a day getting to/from wherever isn't an issue.
Can anyone recommend somewhere that isn't likely to a) cost hundreds of pounds to get to, b) be heaving with tourists or c) be filled with flesh eating insect swarms of biblical proportions?
I imagine this rules out quite big chunks of the northern hemisphere already. I'm also a bit of a wuss when it comes to dealing with scary things like buses in countries where I can't really communicate with the locals (eg, almost everywhere). I can just about scrape together the ability to read French and German, but that's about as far as my linguistic abilties go.
I'd also like to avoid places I've been many times before, which includes the Peak District, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Snowdonia and pretty much anywhere in Cornwall.
Huh, not been to the Picos for a very, very long time... best part of twenty years, I guess . Not sure why I'd forgotten about them, and now I feel old, to boot. I guess they're not quite as convenient to get to as the Pyrenees, but they'd presumably be quieter as a result.
Northern Greece,Vikos Gorge (one of the most spectaculur walks on planet earth) Aoos river canyon,Papingos,Perama caves and mix with a bit of snorkelling/swimming at Parga. If theres a better walk than Vikos its probably the monastries at Meteore (ala James bond)Quite simply one of the worlds great areas still untouched by the Brit hoardes.
Never been to Greece. That's quite an epic gorge; I'm a bit of a sucker for dramatic limestone scenery, and there are a few places I'd definitely like to revisit (Ardeche/Cevennes) or visit for the first time (Ordesa valley, Anisclo canyo) which are similar, though on a slightly smaller scale.
The Perama caves and the neighbourhood look awesome, too... I can think of at least one person who'd be very keen to visit that with me. Might make that a holiday next year
