Having seen this video recently, I'd love to trek up Mt. Teide later this year. As I'm now in full time education (for my sins) I'm looking to do the trip as cheap as possible, but also need to know some of the logistics, eg, nearest town to start off in, route planning, how much time to climb, etc. Ideally would like to get a bivvy/wild-camp near the summit for some night-time photography. Any details you could throw my way would be much appreciated. I've read that you can get a permit online now, although I can't find a link.
I'm UK Mountain Leader trained and highish grade climber with Summer & Winter experience, but this would be my highest peak yet and first foreign peak...
Go into a bookshop or library and look at Paddy Dillon's guide to Tenerife. It will be an excellent starting point. You could even buy the book and provide Paddy with enough royalties to buy a few tea bags .
Mount Teide is not a difficult climb, I was there November 2009. You can get a bus to the foot of it from the North and the south of the island. Permits are available on line but limited to 200 a day. However if you stay at the refuge the night before you are allowed to the summit before 9:30 or thereabouts without one. Although a lot of people do it wild camping is actually illegal anywhere in spain and my Teide is quite vigorously controlled in the holiday periods.

Alas... currently out of print!
However... a whole new edition should be available later this year, with lots more routes on El Teide, and stuff you didn't even realise was available on other parts of the island... such as the long-distance GR131.
