Very sad to hear the news of a Irish climber dieing 50m from the summit. Despite efforts to save him by other members of team, he died. He also hadn't heard that his wife had given birth just a few days earlier.

John Delaney (41) from Kilcock, Co Kildare according to IrishCentral.com To balance out the bad news I don't know if it has been posted before but Richard Parks (ex Wales rugby union player) has successfully climbed Everest this morning. This is part of a pioneering 7 month race to climb the highest mountain on each of the world’s continents and venture to The South and Geographical North Poles. It is known as the Richard Parks 737 Challenge and is proudly raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care. More information can be found at http://www.737challenge.com/

Well done to Mark and his team. Does Mark or his expedition have a blog/web site? Would be great to hear a trip report!!!! Kelvin, na, itwas meshoeing him jumaring and Prussik loops How's the knee? Mine's near healed, I'll have to do a lot of strenghting of it because of muscle loss.

I followed them on Everestnews - summitclimb, from the north. Not followed them back down tho. Good to hear your knee is healing, strength soon picks up tho chap and you'll be raring to go. Saw consultant on Monday, two weeks after the op and I was convinced they'd done nothing - cartilidge was popping all the time but seems they did a lot of work. Saw all the pics of the inside and there's scar tissue everywhere, mostly old stuff but some from this op too. All in awkward places to heal. Scar tissue on one of the ligaments too, so it was more than stretched last Oct and I'm lucky to have got away with that at all. Some bone surfaces look smooth and fine but some, mostly the kneecap, are like six inch nails driven through a piece of timber, proper rough like. Some of the cartilidge has worn so thin that it's turned genuinely transparent and won't last much longer. My job, 5-a-side footy, badminton, table tennis and road running for far too many years have done a job they can be proud of and worn it too fook. Suffice to say, I got a proper rollicking for being back at work, for doing some gentle six mile (on the flat) walks but to be honest this should have all been explained by the physio when I left hospital but I got the standard shove out the door. So, back in four weeks to see them again and till then I have to go easy on it to give the scar tissue a chance to heal to itself etc. No hills, no excercise other than short walks on the flat. No work either... 'self employed mate, sorry, I'll just take it easy'. I ask about the Alps in August as that was my plan and he was non commital, so I'm taking that as an 'I'll be fine as long as I put up with the pain'. So roll on the next four week... then it's time to get on it. There's always codeine, morphine, etc.

Sorry to hear that Kelvin. Will you need another OP? My knee caps, especially the left one, nearly worn away!! Carrying to much weight and jumping out of perfectly good aeroplanes, in a previous job didn't help!! Total knee replacements at some stage in the future, can't wait........Not. Tried EverestNews but can only get to 2009, how did you get up to date reports?
|
 |
Plenty more ops in the next few years by the sound of it. haha http://www.everestnews.com/everest2011/summitclimbeveresttibet05222011.htm
