After another case of itchy feet I'm thinking of heading up Whernside this Saturday if the weather stays ok.

I'm travelling on public transport. Don't have my map here at work but the way I see it I can either start at Ribblehead, head up from there on the footpath and then down to Dent.

Or I could start at Dent station, go up via Great Wold, drop down on the West side and loop back to Dent.

Any advice/tips from people? For a gauge of fitness I've done Ryd Ddu up Snowdon twice and been fine both times with appropriate nibbles and breaks.

Personally I'd start at Dent and finish at Ribblehead - you may have a fair wait for a train and the Station Inn at Ribblehead is rather more welcoming than a platform bench at Dent Station.

I agree.

The Dent side is also a more interesting and unusual approach to the summit. I just hope you get some views because I do find Whernside a pretty miserable hill in the dank!

Good luck to anyone doing the rail option though

High Bentham to Dent maybe also a plausible option. Lets you get the whole length of the hill in, although it'll mean a longer walk and two train tickets. The area round Twisleton scar is nice though.

If you want to do the whole hill, you can avoid the low level walk from High Bentham to Ingleton (and the need to buy two single train tickets) by breaking your train journey at Settle and catching the 581 bus from Settle to Ingleton (every 2hrs Mon to Sat) or the Ingleborough Pony 832/3 (Sundays).

Timetables at Dalesbus.

All duly noted, didn't go in the end due to a very foggy forecast. Still its looking brighter this time.

Dent station is about four miles outside Dent, you've a lot of tarmac bashing in between the two!

I'd start at Horton-in-ribblesdale, and go up 'n' over the saddly bit of Ingleborough. It's not too bad from the Horton side, and you don't have to go right to the top unless you want to.

Once onto the saddle, drop down to the Hill inn and up Whernside via gilpin (?) farm, then you can walk back down the long ridge way to Ribblehead, and get a train from there.

Or go to the pub.

Tourist: Why is Dent station so far from Dent village?

Local: 'Appen they wanted it near t' railway!
