Me and my mrs are thinking of going on a canoe/camping trip. We've both never been to Wales before and we thought this would be a great way to explore. We're going to do a four night trip with Wye Vally Canoe centre and then spend the remainder of our trip in a campsite nearby. Flicking through the cool camping book on Wales we are thinking of Fforest Fields campsite. It says there are some nice walks in the surrounding areas but i would also like to explore the Black Mountains and am not sure how far away they would be?
Anyone been to either of these places before? Would you recommend them or maybe could suggest any better sites perhaps? Or maybe a campsite more central to walks in Brecon Beacons would be better for us?
Black Mountains not very far away at all! Its 5 miles from Glasbury to Gospel Pass which is the gateway to the black mountains. From there its not far to Llanthony abbey (there are a couple of campsites down this valley and also in Llanvihangel Crucorney). plenty of very nice scenery and walking
When we lived in England (Stratford upon Avon) Fforest Fields was our favourite campsite. Friendly owner, nice area, plenty of wildlife including red kites. Also there is a great walk across the plateau to Aberdwr (I hope I've spelt it correctly) to a pub with great food and VERY GOOD welsh white wine (I hope I know what I'm talking about as I live in France). It's just atthe Northern end of the Black Mountains and well worth a visit. My wife isn't a real fan of camping but she loved Fforest Fields.
