Hello, Dog. I was out with the team at Cwm Gwdi yesterday - and a lovely day it was too, though a touch cool when lying in the shade in that nippy northerly. But I was lying out on the hill all day til about 3pm, so it wouldn't have been me you saw at the carpark. Possibly Cath or Nicky from SARDA England - the Dartmoor and Exmoor guys were up for the weekend for joint training.
Hope you had a good walk - there were a lot of people going up and down from Cwm Gwdi yesterday. I've seen fell runners go down that scree path into Cwm Sere - though the faces are a bit unconsolidated and there's been quite a lot of stuff come down those gullies over the last two winters!
There is a ridge walk to Pen Y Fan around the Neuadd Reservoir. If you start and finish near the reservoir there is some wooded area. The walk will only be half a day though (if you dilly dally along the way).
Personally this place is so busy I wouldn't recommend it. The ridge walk from Llandbedr in the black mountains will be one I'd recommend in the Brecons, beautiful but surprisingly not popular. You won't find many people but there is no scrambling or trees either.
Yeah that wind was incredibly strong and made it feel cool on top. I was amazed at how busy both Cwm Gwdi carparks were, seeing as you need a PHD in navigation to find them !
We had a great walk thanks. Took two newbies out and they couldn't have had a better introduction, even thought they were surprised at how tough it was on legs and lungs.
Tackling Pen y Fan from Cwm Gwdi is definitely the best way to do it, if the toughest, and a great introduction to hillwalking! Glad they had good weather for it and hope they'll want more.
