 Hi folks,
Based in Belgium at the moment and have tried the Ardennes, Vosges and various areas on Belgian/ German border and did not like them.
Any recommendations in Eastern France or Southern Germany?
I am looking for somewhere within 6 hours drive so that puts the Alps out.
Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen Can you describe why you did not like them? What sort of areas do you like and why? That will help to narrow it down a bit! Roos

Hi Stephen Curious to see how you respnd to Peter's question, but meantime, try an Easyjet flight from Brussels to Geneva and try the Jura mountains.....

 Hi Pete & Bh,
Its mainly the Forestry and the fact these places are not one bit wild from what I have seen.
Flying is a out for me as tickets need to booked months in advance to get good deals, I want to be able to head off at short notice.
Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen I agree with you to an extent - I find nothing compares to the hills and wilderness in Scotland. I amuse myself with a combination of all - just being away from the daily routine is a happy alternative. I see it all as 'training' for when i get to Scotland and find all the miles help......

For the sort of wildrness you're after I can recommend Norway There is lots of good walking in Germany but it tends to be relatively close to population. Small rivers and gorges, forest, cliffs and castles. But it is the sort of walking where you stop in a cafe along the way rather than sit with a flask in the middle of nowhere. Places like the Eifel and Harz may not be what you are looking for but they are within reach. The elbsandsteingebirge is probably a bit too far East.

Stephen, is southern Germany really within reach? If so then it opens up the Bavarian Alps, although googlemaps shows it as over 7 hours from Brussels to Munich... Nearer, but in northern Germany, have you already tried the Harz Mountains? Maybe still a bit forested, but googling some images seemed to show some quite decent looking hills. And only about 5 hours drive away. Just ideas, I've not walked in either area myself (but have done in Austria quite near the German border).

Hi Bh, Scotland is such a fabolous place, I get over 3-4 times a year, infact I am getting married their in September (Mrs is Scottish). I agree with you about the training and do like the Ardennes and Vosges during winter. Hi Pete, Norway does sound great, its definiley on my wish list I have been in the Eiffel and it was pleasant, must check out the Harz. Hi Matt, I could probaly make it to the Bavarian Alps in about 7-8 hours so its within range on a bank holiday. Cheers all, Stephen

Hi Stephen It's hard to get away from all those trees ! I happen to prefer the forests for their beauty, peace and character. Why don't you mix up your outdoor experience a bit and try some canoe camping ? Lots of fine rivers within your reach I would think. Cheers Geoff

Hi Geoff, Thanks for the recommendation, good point about the canoe camping. Cheers, Stephen

 Hi folks,
After much research it sounds like I need to be heading to the Alps for what I want.
Thanks all for the help,
Stephen

You should have a look at the mountain of Jura in Franche Comté in Easter France, it is by the border between France and Switzerland (near Geneva). It is very nice, I have been many times there with my family in the summer where we did some camping and stayed over in the mountain in a nice gite and you have got the chance there to go swimming in lakes as well as going walking in the mountains. After if you want to go closer to Germany you should go in Alsace in the Vosges Mountains
