Anybody else had similar problems?

I have this issue with both an HTC Desire and the HTC Desire S.

I can receive email but not reply or send afresh.

I get a mesage stating that my email acount settings are incorrect but they are not as the original HTC Desire used to work and the HTC Desire S worked OK for a few minutes fro new but I took my (Vodafone) SIM card out of the Desire S afte it proved to work and put it in the Desire to see if the problem still existed (it does). When I put the SIM back in the Desire S it stopped working and now only receives email.

It works if I am at home when it picks up and uses my home network but not in the street locally, although my Samsung Galaxy S2 works OK everywhere.

It point to a setting peculiar to the HT Desire handsets but I am struggling to see what that is.

Skinjob.  I've got an HTC Wildfire and sometimes this comes up with me.  I don't know if its something to do with the signal being received.  Generally I have ignored it and the message goes.

Maybe you need the network to be a bit stronger to send the email? Not sure but I just ignore it as it does not happen much.  I'm just aware of it now.

I know it doesn't solve the issue but I've just accepted it may happen.

hey you have to configure the htc wildfire s for sending the email because in pc the email are send via same address but in phone you have give other address. You can get the setting from your email account just go to the setting and select the option send pop and forwarding you will get the addres.

Thanks for the input.

It seems that with the HTC Desire both the sending and receiving email server settings are the same, the difference being that with the outgoing server settings the 'requires a login' box must be ticked.

Requiring a login is to prevent spammers using the outgoing mail server. There are various systems in place to prevent spam use of outgoing mail servers including:

Require a login.
Allow sending of mail within a certain time window of checking for new email.
Allow anyone on the same network to send mail without authentication, but reject attempts to send email from other networks.

I have the same at the moment, but it happens all the time for some reason. In your outgoing server settings until the box so you only have the smtp and have ask security. You may need to change the smtp to gmail or similar if you have an account.

Login require - unticked

SMTP (I am on orange) Smtp.orange.net

Security type - NONE

Server port 25

May help.

It does seem that once it starts it keeps on doing it for a while. So in true IT style - turn it off/take battery out etc.

Get a gmail account and redirect any other accounts to that one. Google created Android phones and they work better with Google tools.

Setting up a gmail account may not help. Many operators grab all traffic to port 25 and force it go go through their mail server. A quick google suggests setting your outgoing server to send.vodafone.net.
[Edit]

Another quick google suggest the following for using the HTC Desire with Gmail on Vodafone works with the following settings:

Mine is POP protocol (cos I prefer the mails downloaded to the device/pc rather than being stored on the server)
email address as given
username is your Gmail (or other) one
and password is how you log on
The pop server is (for gmail) pop.gmail.com
Security is SSLand the (default) port is 995
smtp server is smtp.gmail.com
SSL security and port 465
